Corrupt people. Money just served as an additional incentive for a person to excel past the rest. Humans are naturally selfish. Although we group-think in a general sense when speaking of survival, if we have the ability to do things on our own, we will.
If we get rid of money, we will just have to replace it with some other form of motivation to get people to build airplanes, police our streets, clean up our garbage, etc.

Sharing within a group of people used to be a matter of survival, when food was too scarce and unreliable to depend solely on your own efforts or those of your family. You'd die if you were too greedy because you would get kicked out of the tribe.
As technology progressed, the social unit became the family rather than the tribe, and people started focusing on things like inheritance and enriching their family line rather than helping out unrelated people.
Now today the unit is the individual and everyone can afford to focus solely on amassing wealth for his own personal use (unless he has kids, of course). This is a historically new phenomenon -- previously such behavior was restricted to people like kings. Which is basically what most people in developed countries live like today, compared to their ancestors of even a century or two ago: kings or queens.

What about the Star Trek type of society where no money exists?

this is pretty much what our "what if" conversation was about. like if we were capable of going back to that type of mentality, but with everything that is available to us today (technology).

The reason why we can't now is that everyone has higher expectations. It used to be that people could find contentment in getting enough food to be full at the end of the day. But modern people are used to having lots of fancy stuff, air conditioning and heating and soft chairs and beds and fast transportation and all kinds of entertainment.
Making all that stuff requires lots and lots of work. Labor becomes more efficient through machinery, but our expectations keep on rising along with the efficiency of labor, so we will always have to work a lot, unless somehow we find a way to just "stop" increasing our expectations and desires.

got into an interesting "what if" conversation (yes we were stoned:p) with the boyfriend the other night about how the world would be if money were just taken out of the equation.
i mean really it's the root of all evil. things that we need for basic survival cost money like healthcare and food, etc... isn't that ed?
this entire world is based on nothing but money and greed. every single little last thing in this world revolves around it.
anyway just wanted to share that. our convo got a little deeper than that though...like how we could all survive on trade and how or bodies were made to be able to survive off the earth but yet look at all this artificial we all put into our bodies, which is probably the cause of all the diseases in this world and mental illnesses. pregnant women should only eat nutritious things and if they all did that, everyone would be healthier, bla bla bla

Actually, money is nuetral. The love of money is root of all evil. Money is a necessary part of today's economy because it serves as a medium of exchange, unit of account, and store of value. So, are you saying, you don't want to be paid with dollars, but rather instead...food? It just doesn't work. Money, as I said, is nuetral. It's us humans which are corrupt. Money is power. Power tends to corrupt. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. Look at today's Wall Street. Giving billions of dollars in bonuses with tax payer money. Greedy bastards...

Nonsense: there's no such thing as a root to all evil. Greed, love for money, lust, sloth, pancakes, jealousy, deep house, wrath, faith, electrical tin openers... none of this is the root of all evil (except maybe for deep house, which is close enough to being 100% evil in its most pure form). I'm sure everyone here can imagine how evil can stem from jealousy, for example. Is that even related to money? No, not at all, jealousy has been around long before humans decided printed paper was worth anything.

Clearly, Minimal is the root of all evil.

Actually, I was correcting a misquote. This "love of money" quote is from the bible. It does not say, "money is the root of all evil", it says, "the love of money is the root of all evil", and that's just the King James version. The New International Version (NIV) would say, "For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.", which I think is more proper translation, because as you said, there are many roots to evil.
