I've discussed this with some male DJ friends and they will admit that it is a huge factor they will sit for days and mix and practice and get new tracks and produce new tracks. I mean DAYS. They obsess. They can't stop. They won't stop.

The best are obsessive. trust.

The love for the music is just the beginning.

obsessiveness is just a gender construct that's been forced onto the male 'gender trait' since birth and is a result of social conditioning from a young age. If females were given dumpster-trucks instead of ballerina tootoo's at a young age, they'd be behind the decks and not in go-go cages.

Yeah i was just thinking the same thing, the comments seem like she is new (partied less then 3 years) and is still on the honeymoon stage of partying. I was the same way 8 years ago. I wish i could see the scene in that light again and forget the things i have seen.

DJ Irene will always be my fav female DJ...she is unbelievably good...at times. She is so diverse...I've heard everything from Uplifting Trance to Dark Dirty Tribal to Hardstyle to Breaks from her.

edit: she also gets the hottest chicks :D

Wha?
Women aren't obsessive?? That's the first I've heard of that.

The male dominance of the industry is a big factor in keeping women away. It's a cycle that is difficult to change. I think young women starting out are perhaps intimidated by how outnumbered they are, and how much they have to push and fight to get ahead (which men do as well, but as mentioned, most men do this naturally, and most women need to make more of an effort.) Nevermind the general reaction to career aggressive women - they are demanding, or bitchy or whatever. I think many women don't like these labels and back down to avoid them. The key for young women starting out IMO - in this industry and others where women are the minority - is to find a good mentor, someone isn't afraid of these labels and who doesn't resort to using her appearance to get ahead. Unless you are in the business of taking your clothes off, resorting to sexuality tactics to get ahead will never ever earn you the respect you want.

How long has she been DJing? I've never heard of her. Is this her full time job?

I'm more talking about full time, internationally touring (or aspiring) DJs whose sole career goal is to DJ/produce.

how?

what encourages them to be obsessive compared to women?

Ok, that post was a not-so-serious poke at the original posters linking things to feminism/etc.

But, hrmm - wish I could find the article again, I skimmed over it the other day, but it was along the lines of "Why men tend to become more obsessive gamers than women" (which I think can apply to this)

The gist of the article was though - Generally speaking, men have a different neurological response to 'winning' than females. There is a center in the brain that gets activated that triggers the 'reward' center of the brain.

This is why you generally see it's men that get addicted to things like video games, gambling, etc - its a neurological response. Part of being competitive is the desire to "win". This can include things like figuring out tough problems, perfecting a skill, or kicking someoens ass at a video game.

While females can be just as capable of doing it, they may not get the same 'rush' from it that men do, and may not lead to the same type of obsessive behavior.

Didn't read the whole study (and cant find the link for it right now), but I think that was the point they were getting at (atleast for video games), but don't think its that far of a stretch to apply it to other skills / etc.
