Catholicism will start to go extinct once the poor countries who are currently propping up its numbers become more literate and have better access to contraceptives and sex education. If you give women the opportunity not to have ten to twenty kids, the vast majority of them will take it. And the crusty moral doctrines of the church will begin to look more absurd to them year by year.

Yes, that explains the Church's growth in North America over the past 15 years. |

And how much of that is due to immigration from poor Latin American countries? ;) |

I'll tell you guys the truth about the catholic church.
It's actually a carefully orchestrated conspiracy run by the Jews and the Federal Reserve. |

Actually the largest group of new Catholics in the States is new converts from either non-believers or protestants. |

They're obviously not going to bother with condoms when the supreme head of their religion is consistently telling them that condoms "help to spread AIDS" without clarifying what that actually means. Similarly, school kids aren't gonna use condoms when their superiors are trying to teach them abstinence by telling them that condoms have an 18% "fail rate". In both cases, countless HIV/AIDS-related deaths and teenage pregnancies could be prevented by condom use if the Catholic church and schools could be a bit less entrenched in conservative religious agendas and a bit more aware of what is going on. Unfortunately, they apparently see it as more important to adhere to scriptures and keep up appearances, which is just sad.
This whole issue reminds me of a general seeing his men getting slaughtered left, right and centre due to his own strategies, yet refusing to make the necessary corrections to curb these casualties due to the perceived moral and ethical obligation of keeping his strategies in place. |

It's not the Church's fault that people choose to ignore the advice about abstinence and then take the advice of not using condoms. Somehow I doubt this spread is due to married couples
The Church shouldn't have to encourage people to use condoms just because. If this was truly an issue of people being so brainwashed by the Church then they wouldn't be having ridiculous amounts of sex in the first place with multiple partners.
If you want to talk about the many many rape victims, well it's not like that's the Church's fault either and like previously mentioned the Catholic Church is probably the single largest private provider of HIV/AIDs treatment and relief in the world. |

Actually, he did clarify what he meant; it's a well documented and long standing position. The actual problem is that media outlets don't report the entire position; rather, they boil it down to a sound-byte... which really doesn't work well to encapsulate an informed and nuanced position, such as Benny's.

Wait... so it's the church's fault that people listen to the "no condom" message while ignoring the "don't someone other then your spouse" part? |

No, but it is the church's fault that it is too concerned about the bible to even touch the issue of birth control with a ten foot pole. When the pope sets such a profound example for the Catholic church, it is quite sad that the example set dodges reality in favor of upholding archaic norms and ethics.
As for the media not reporting the whole story, you're gonna have to present some proof that somehow contradicts the statement reported by the various news outlets so far to expand on that. |
