Ghost Producers. What do you think about ghost producers? Have you ever thought about making music for someone else and them attaching their name on the track and selling it as their own, why or why not?
Notable Ghost Producers
Charlie May (Sasha)
Santos (Timo Maas)
Martin Buttrich (Loco Dice)
And often, a producer's "engineer" is often the one that comes up with a lot of the ideas and is actually a ghost producer, but is sold as the "engineer." |

Junkie XL has produced a lot of Sasha's stuff as well.
I mean, yeah, technically its fake, but I think a lot of these guys are (or were) getting well paid to ghost produce. If you are trying to make a living, then you do what you have to do to pay the bills. It is also quite possible that a lot of these guys are quite happy producing other peoples' stuff. Becoming a big time dance artist entails DJing, touring, and a lot of things that maybe these guys just aren't interested in.
While I think that Sasha is not technically a "producer" as most of us think of one, I think having him in the studio would provide a valuable insight into your music, only because of his years of experience as a DJ in the industry. Like it or not, the guy is a trend-setter, and definitely has an ear for good music.
I work with a production partner, and while I do most of the work, the amount he does contribute is invaluable to my productions. Everything I have produced with his input is better than the stuff I have produced on my own, so we share the production credits. |

Sasha, yeah, groundbreaking awesome music. They are a whole production team though.
But what their roles in the studio are, is not something you know anything about. |

Buttrich use to be Timo Maas's ghost producer, Timo's 'Subtellite' was produced by Santos. http://www.myspace.com/santosmusik. He also works with Alex Dolby. |

i Forgot to include in the OP. What are some other Producers/DJ's that employ a ghost producer. Spill it man, no one will cry foul. Or will they? A lot of it is public though, but mostly under the cloak "so and so is my engineer." Well engineering is like 70% of what makes good music. |

99.999% of all rock/pop songs are done by an engineer/ghost producer, you dont see those fans complaining.
Its not a big deal, its just that people seem to expect EDM to be done entirely by one person on his own.
Its all marketing, the artist name is a brand, and behind it can be more producers. Its like its always been, unless you are Moby.
What counts is the result of the music.

Also, how do you guys think Ghost Production plays out? Ghost Producer contacts DJ or Producer and tells them "hey I have a track that might fit your sound," or the DJ contacts the ghost producer and asks them if they can produce a few tracks for them. I've been thinking about it and i'd like to find some DJ's or Producers that could use some music, especially tracks that i've produced that will probably never see the light of day under my own project, unless of course I were to create another project to release it through.
With that said, it might also be fun to branch out to other genres by ghost producing without having to create a whole new project around it. Just give someone established the music, but still have the satisifaction of being able to be versatile and make music that you would normally not make, but could make if you applied yourself. Also seeing reactions and the success of the musics from a voyeuristic angle might be fun stuff. |
