Well, if you're flying Air Transat, your decision has been made for you.

Story

All flights on this airline cancelled until June 1.

That is a terrible way to live. How often do 'experts' get it wrong? Heads should role in both cases, wasting money, and not doing their job. If we followed this logic, we would end with...wait...our government! Oh god, the nightmares have come true.

Yes, experts have their place, and we should have faith in them, but they should also be held to some sort of performance goals. Systems cannot be run with the 'just in case' mentality.

The influenza pandemic in the late 30's killed millions. Bet that started off pretty small too.

I understand that the MEDIA blows things out of proportion, but the people at WHO and the disease control centres should absolutely err on the side of caution. It is not the WHO's fault that the media is bored of sensationlizing the recession and is grabbing on to this story more than necessary.

2000 people are already infected in Mexico...not large relative to the population but if you trace the number of people that have come in contact with those 2000 and so on, it can get really big, really fast.

The immune system overreacts to defend itself against the virus which proves to be lethal

This swine flu is definitely not a particularly lethal strain. Yes, a few people have died, but regular flu kills people too. It's only the avian flu that's been unusually fatal.

That's not to say that people shouldn't take precautions anyway, but honestly, if people stopped being idiots and took the same basic precautions they are supposed to take every day - wash hands, cough into a tissue or sleeve, don't rub your eyes all the time - then none of this would even be necessary. People are disgusting and unsanitary, that's the problem.

no way, i'd still go. You have more chance getting killed by an angry mexican midget that you forgot to tip than getting the flu.

I don't know if i'd even go. I'd rather lose the money on the trip, than get sick and hospitalized in Mexico. My health is far more important than a few hundred dollars and a good story.

Slight over reaction to a somewhat nothing virus.

If you wouldn't go on this trip then why would you ever leave your house. You are more likely to catch a virus just as fatal as this leaving your house and going to work every day.

Why would transat cancel all of their flights and eat all of those costs if there was nothing going on?

I work in the public health dept of region of waterloo and whenever a "potential" pandemic arises, we get hit hard with media requests, numerous phone calls from worried citizens, then the head MOH dr has to "prepare" for a dinky strain of swine flu...

Listeriosis outbreak was retarded too

another typical over reaction.....most likely they are concerned about possible liability issues if someone who has the flu gets on their plane and infects someone else. In their minds, they are better off eating the costs of shutting down then to pay out a potential class action suit.

Simple over reaction. You are using appeal to authority as your arguments, rather than maybe presenting some facts as to why you think it is so dangerous.

For the SARS scare, the WHO declared Canada as a dangerous destination to travel to, due to the high probability of being infected. What happened? How many deaths, and confirmed cases were there? What happened to our travel industry?

There were 43 deaths attributed to SARS in an 8 month period (source). Annually it is estimated that more than 500 people die each year in Canada due to the regular flu (source).

Put those numbers in perspective.
