Yes, experts have their place, and we should have faith in them, but they should also be held to some sort of performance goals. Systems cannot be run with the 'just in case' mentality.

Remember that in cases like this, a lot of the information does not even come from experts that we pay (government officials/scientists), it comes from the media, who are paid to comment, and not protect.

All I am saying is that you should actively question the information that you are given.

I'm not saying that we should put 100% of our faith in "experts" without questioning them...but they are "experts" for a reason and dismissing this as nothing is kind of naive.

let's put it this way...who's in a better position to do a risk assessment of this situation...
health experts or the people posting in this thread ;)

of course we should always question information. but to dismiss it out of some sense of perceived knowledge or because what's happened in the past with other illnesses/threats proved to be blown out of proportion is foolish. do we wait until something kills thousands before we take it seriously?

that is a terrible way to live too...

now all these travel advisories...banning of pork imports in other countries...that's perhaps a wee bit over-the-top ;)

Could we maybe wait until it kills more than 7?

The problem here is that I don't think any actual realistic risk assessment has been done, people are just in panicked "pandemic" mode. Statistically, this swine flu actually seems to have a lower mortality rate than the "ordinary" kind.

Out here in the real world we have something called priorities. Wasting insane amounts of time and money on some sissy flu is diverting resources from more important things like cancer or AIDS or Hepatitis A.

You can't go ape over every trivial risk. You have to take into account the actual degree of risk, not just base every decision on the worst conceivable outcome no matter how unlikely. If everybody took your position, nothing productive would ever get done. The world is a dangerous place.

My friend Omar went to Mexico City on Thurs am. I was house sitting for him cuz he's been caring for my cat since July. Last I went by was Sun afternoon, as he was due to come back Sun night. I hadn't heard from him since he left. 2 cell phones turned off, no reply from email, finally went by the apartment tonight to find my cat very hungry and thirsty and lonely. He is totally MIA. Calling his work tomorrow, and the suspense is killing me.... very nervous something is really wrong. :(

Why don't you just admit that the folks at the WHO have a better sense of risk than you do? It's comical that you are so much more knowledgeable than they are.

It's quite likely they know you don't. Accept it.
