just got a wild idea, i know, but what if we take out the sidewalk on the west side and trim the one on the east side? with that extra 2m+ on one side and a 1m+ on the other we essentially create another car lane that is your standard 3m lane. it would increase capacity and get people down into the core even faster. this could be applied to many of the smaller streets.
however, on already busy streets this clearly won't help that much. so stemming from jay's idea, this is why i think elevated streets could be installed like on yonge or bloor. you would basically add 100% more capacity to that street. also, the extra space from the edge of that elevated street to property line could be used for parking, so essentially, you could park your car and climb through the window right into your office if you work near one of these structures.
it'd basically be like this image below. couldn't find a better reference anywhere else.

so basically like that, only it would stretch right to the property line where the parking would be or laybys. however, we should plan for the future and build the structure so more levels could be built up. for example, make the second level express with exits at major intersections like bloor, eglinton, 401, etc.
let me know what you think. |

Maybe reading this might actually help you understand what we residents of Jarvis want:

cyclophobia? LOL!!!! I have no issues with bikes per say. Add allt he bike lanes you want! AS LONG AS IT DOES NOT TAKE AWAY CAPACITY FROM OTHER MODES OF TRANSPORT! |

LOL!
that made me laugh
In any case, here's an idea:
Convert all 4+ lane streets (2+ per direction) into carpooling streets where the left lane is used for carpoolers (2+ persons), and the right for all those single sitting geniouses. And enforce it! I'm predicting traffic problems would quickly dissapear. |

-drive on the sidewalks
-drive the wrong way on one way streets
-run stop lights and stop signs
-use the pedestrian walkways to stop traffic in order for me to go through an intersection
-weave in and out of traffic downtown
...and when it suits my needs the best, pick which side of the road I want to drive on |
Cyclists don't want to be treated like another vehicle. They want to be treated as cyclists! Which means doing exactly what you mentioned above (or, at least those types of privledges in a safe way). |

exactly. i don't see why we can't do it on our major streets here. it could do so much for the city. instead we have economy-killing-lawnmower-banning-crazy-old-two-headed-monster called millerguinty trying to close down a lane of jarvis between bloor and QQ. |

Elevated roads are a great idea. This effectively gives everyone what they want; separated transit and bike lanes, AND more car capacity.
It also will not happen in Toronto anytime in the near future, because it is technically spending infrastructure money to support more cars, which the present Toronto government has a clear philosophical opposition to. |

it might only work if there's a 2 tiered system like i propose. lower level for carpoolers and upper for single occupancy cars. but there again, i'd rather have those carpool lanes for other cars since the majority don't carpool
so please, do us all a favour and get your bike off my road and start driving instead ffs. |

Ha ha, keep on driving in downtown, only masochist will drive during rush hour.
I'm, on the other hand, will get around twice as fast, no parking, no pollution, and it's absolutely free!
That's why you so jealous of cyclists. |
