| Mastering and mixing are two halves of the same process for me now. I tend to mix into a compressor (I was against this previously, but I'm finding it gives good results:wtf: ) and then I'm tending to set the kick to -6 bass to -8, tweak from there to taste. I'm also doing alot of highpassing on the pads and a bit more eqing overall. I'm finding then that the only real mastering it needs is a bit of maximiser on the master, just enough to get a bit of pump and get the overall level up a bit. I'm also trying to make sure that every 2 bars theres a clip of +0.1 dB, which keeps the levels reasonably high. |

You're clipping the track on purpose? |

I like that one.
The mastering process is no match for a turn of the wrist. |

| I firmly believe that tracks that are not squeezed will last longer, i think that listeners unconsciously choose to not listen to a track that they know to be ridiculously loud. |

There was a site a couple years ago, written by a mastering engineer, that had analysis of the dynamics of hit records, concluding that records that had stood the test of time tended to be very dynamic. You can still see it in the Web Archive:

You can click through the "next" links at the bottom of the pages to see analysis of lots of hit albums. |

Here are some more examples...
Good mixing + mastering (to my ears):
Solid Sessions - "Janeiro": [mp3][image]
Dance 2 Trance - "Psychedelic Solution": [mp3][image]
The Orb - "U.F.Orb": [mp3][image]
Poor ultra-compressed mastering:
Spooky - "Stereophonic": [mp3][image] |
