Dude I realized now that sounded like an insult but honestly it was a serious question. Didn't mean to disrespect.

I actually like clean digital compression, as you can get the tone right on the tracks and not worry about what the compressor will do.

You need to incorporate hardware compression/limiting.

I agree with everything else you're saying, but here's another black/white, absolute comment - NEED is the wrong word. I totally agree that the vast majority of professional mastering houses use high end hardware processors. But still, NEED is the wrong word. There are fantastic songs which have been mastered using software processors.

Most of those software processors have accompanying hardware that goes with them, like the powercore products. But I guess you're right. That's probably an old-world view that is swiftly changing. For my own stuff I just slap on the adaptive limiter in Logic and there's no discernable loss of dynamic. I'm really impressed with Logic's limiter. The soft-synths are getting better and better too.

The difference is negligible though.

To Be Honest I find the difference between a mastered track and an unmastered track pretty insignificant. Its like if you have a cake with icing and the icing is 1 cm thick [unmastered] as opposed to 1 and 1/2 cm thick [mastered]...who cares? Its cake. I find the mastering phase pretty arbitrary, unless of course people use it to make tracks sound worse, which is mostly the case.

Right. And telling people to purposely hard clip every sound isn't stupid.

its not uncommon for a professional mastering engineer to digitally clip a track at the AD stage of conversion to add an extro db or so of gain. After all its a very similar process as brickwall limiting and it often sounds better (depending on your converters) than a limiter at getting rid of large transient peaks.

Mastering is a very important process and is used to make an album sound coherant for example, allowing the track to work on a multitude of systems including radio etc. Making it louder without losing dynamics etc etc.

Complete rubbish. Most mastering engineers will use software for their limiting duties because they are look-ahead and a lot cleaner and tend to be very transparent.

This bit is funny:

"Think about when you are in a club, locked into a tune and controlled by the music, like you're really into this moment. I would bet that often compression is making this lock happen."

Nope, thats the pills :p

Just like everything/anything in life, too much of a good thing will ruin your end product. I cringe when I hear songs that are compressed and limited out the ass.
