Cool track, is that the original kick?

Yes. Lots of compression and bit crushing. It's a cheap trick, but it works.

nice, I like! what did you use to distort the percussion?

here is my try, a nice little goa trance track :D

I chose NI FM8 because it is the synth I use probably the most.

First step was to get a banging percussion just from 5 samples. I distorted (favorite tool of choice: Ohmicide), compressed, EQed, made a wav of the loop, sliced it up, rearranged, processed and gently distorted again. That was probably the most time-consuming part.
I left the kick and some of the hihats pretty much untouched, just used some compression.

The most difficult part was to get the bass sounding decent, it sounded like total . I had to render it several times and EQ out the bad frequencies. Then I layered it with a sub... and again it was a hard time getting the mid-bassline to fit with the subbass. The track is still way too heavy on the lows. For a trance track, I would usually prefer a different for the bassline, FM8 can sometimes sound with the basic bass waveforms. Well after hours of EQing, I think it sounds listenable now, but far from perfect.

The leads and riffs were pretty easy, just used a basic patch, add a trancegate, add an arpeggiator.

*edit: update - fixed bass issues and other stuff.

A combination of iZotope Trash, and that lovely Sonalksis bit crusher and evil compressor.

Kick:
Sonalksis TBK2 <--bit crusher
Sonalksis TBK3 <--evil compressor

Clap:
iZotope Trash

Hat:
Ping-Pong Delay (Steinberg)
PSP Nitro

Crash:
PSP Nitro

It's not supposed to be! I love this exercise. Good idea JBJ.

However this sounds great so far. Plenty of funky ed up noises in true cybernetica rapport. Your lows are out of control, but who cares. Like I said before, this is just supposed to be a creative exercise, not a polished piece.

Enjoyed it Lars!

thanks man! glad you like :)

I know and love PSP nitro, but I will definitely take a look at the sonalksis bitcrusher, the subtle crushing on the kick you made is just perfect.

Yeah, we could probably spend a lot of hours on polishing... but then again, I think a lot of guys here proved that having a limit on your synth choice and on samples is not a limit to creativity!

Second that this was a great idea JBJ, I think its really a great learning experience.

One complaint though... I'd love to make a DnB track... but not with a clap. ... with a snare you can do so much more, IMO.

^ That's correct.

i think this is the first time i've focused more on the over all groove of a track rather than how well it sounds sonically. it actually makes me want to uninstall and dump all of my samples/instruments and just leave my tape 808, 909 and 606's and 1 synth that i know bottom up

Okay, I've uploaded the tracks by cybernetica, Joss Weatherby, and wrzonance and linked to the files in the opening post. These are sounding really nice, guys, keep it up!

Yeah, that was kind of the point, focus on the groove and the music, running with ideas rather than examining and tweaking everything to death. I've recently thought of doing pretty much what you described, deleting most of my stuff and just using the Moog for my synth sounds, perhaps leaving one nice VST on there for pads and other polyphonic stuff.
