If thread is anymore about gifts, here is a protip:

Get something different or special, and make up/ tell some fakeass story to it, so that the kids hold the item as special to them.
squirrelly
I am my niece's "God Mother" and I rarely see her. I love her to death, but my brother is a douche and controlling. I never buy her games and toys, but buy her books so her brain will start developing. My brother doesn't let anyone touch her or hold her (she'll be 2 next month) so I quit driving over there because the minute she even trips my brother is like OMG SHE'S GONNA DIE. Dude, it's a KID, she's gonna fall eventually.

I'm just gonna wait until she rebels against his douchey ass and comes and stays with "cool aunt Sara" when she's 15. :o

My nephews live in Poland so it's rare I get to see them :( When I do, though, I am playing outside with them, not buying presents. My adopted nephews (friends babies) are my fav's :D I always babysit those kids :D

Jesus are people ever stupid, lol. I do understand the initial trepidation with holding/handling babies...but ffs they aren't going to break.

I also can't help but laugh at parents who think their child is some kind of prodigy, simply for doing things that any other child of the same age would be expected to do. Like, parents get all freaked out about stuff that, in the beginning, is nothing more than a reflex. Lol, idiots. I get why it's exciting...but still - idiots. :p
montana

i know exactly what you mean and i'm totally guilty of it sometimes and so is my mom. lol i think it just has to do with the fact that i don't know what kids are supposed to be doing at what age, and i listen to my 4 year old nephew talk and stuff and it's like i'm talking to another adult. he uses big words and his mannerisms are hilarious and very adult-like so naturally i think he's advanced for his age, but he's probably just like any other little 4 year old absorbing everything around him and copying what he sees in his parents, etc... although, the teachers at his preschool did tell my sister that he's definitely a little ahead of the rest of his class. so i think he's special and has a lot of potential. too bad my sister is just letting it go to waste. she should have him learning other languages and playing sports and stuff right now. all he does is play with race cars and watch TV and eat mcdonalds.

but i DO notice like every parent bragging about their kid being advanced and bla bla bla. it's so annoying. i feel like saying, "oh so you mean your kid is totally normal and right on track for a 3 year old? that's great":stongue:

PS- montana they are so cute! omg the first one is gorgeous.

I just don't understand why parents don't know those things. I know for a fact (well, at least where I come from) that TONS of health teaching is done with expectant mothers about growth and development milestones and stuff like that. I guess perhaps with the actual excitement of having the damn baby it all goes out the window once they're actually born, lol.

Some specific examples that come to mind are from the day I spent in the NICU follow up unit, where high risk babies would return to be assessed for developmental growth and stuff. High risk babies being those born prematurely, or with certain birth defects, etc.

Anyhow, there was this one young mother in, her mother along with her as well. And basically all we did was run through certain tests to check for specific expected reflexes/responses, check for fine/gross motor skills, speech, visual/spatial understanding, etc. etc.

So yeah this young mom and her mom kept fawning over how the baby was rolling over and lifting her head, and always seemed to be focused on something during feedings, and how it was just sooo amazing that the baby really seemed to be clued in to her surroundings.

Well the OT/PT/RN were just like, "Yeah no, all of those are expected developmental tasks, and in fact the looking to one side may even indicate a deficit."

Lololol.

The sad thing about the NICU follow up is that typically it's a lot of ty families coming through there. Lots of young mothers, alcoholics, drug users, etc.

Goddamn that was quite the tangent. :wtf:

I don't think much goes into new parental education in the US. I could be wrong, but it seems like so many new and expectant mothers are as clueless as ever.

yea pretty much.

it's because they don't ing care and they are just getting knocked up to keep some around or for some other ed up selfish reason like they are bored and following some sort of understood natural order of things without really sitting down and thinking about/researching what is involved in raising a kid.

and you can't expect the parenting skills of a nation where the divorce rate is at 50% to be top notch now can you? lol
