...compulsive liars?

Do you call them out? Or do you let them continue to lie about things and overexaggerate all the time?

I did a little reading about it, and it seems that habitual lying starts early in childhood and arises as a defense mechanism.

quote:

A compulsive liar is defined as someone who lies out of habit. Lying is their normal and reflexive way of responding to questions. Compulsive liars bend the truth about everything, large and small. For a compulsive liar, telling the truth is very awkward and uncomfortable while lying feels right. Compulsive lying is usually thought to develop in early childhood, due to being placed in an environment where lying was necessary. For the most part, compulsive liars are not overly manipulative and cunning (see, Pathological Liar), rather they simply lie out of habit - an automatic response which is hard to break and one that takes its toll on a relationship (see, how to cope with a compulsive liar).

So I'm wondering, if it's such a major part of a person's life, should you call someone out on it?

I had this friend in HS who was a BRUTAL habitual liar/storyteller/over-exaggerator, and we let him do it for years...until when we finally called him out he would just deny deny deny. Like he believed his own lies. And the ty thing was, he wasn't ALWAYS lying, so it was a 'boy who cried' wolf situation with him, where we just never believed ANYthing he said.

So yeah. Is it a lost cause? Or worth saying something? Is it dangerous to that kind of person's psyche to bust them on something that has become such second nature to them?

lol my best friend is one. i call him out all the time.

he's actually pretty cool about it and i think sometimes he feels like a douchebag when he realizes how badly he exaggerates.

Have you always called him out? I feel like with my buddy, maybe he wouldn't have done it for so long if we had just busted him early on. But instead we were always like "Okkk Gordo..." and sorta let him believe that we believed him.

I really don't know why we never said anything, lol. He moved out west a few years ago, so I dunno if he's still like that...but I'm pretty sure he isn't.

Do what I do with Eric, ignore half, and just make fun of him for the other half.

yea it can be frustrating dealing with someone like that.

i feel bad talking about him but i love him and we go way back and he's a good sport about me busting him bullting a lot. he just has a very strong desire to impress people so he's constantly exaggerating stories and sometimes when he tells me a story i don't know why, but i just know he's full of lol it must be his "ENERGY":stongue:

We have this friend that always embellishes stories more EVERY time he tells it. So, he may tell someone a story on Monday, and then tell someone else the same story. If you listen to the story he tells the next guy, you will notice all kinds of that wasn't a part of the story before. We give him so much for it too.

What if the person tells BIG lies? like "I won the lottery" or "My dad is sick with cancer" or some other like, mega ? And they're not just ing around like Eric.

Whenever I meet a liar I always kill them. No exceptions.

exactly! lol that's how my friend is too.

it's so in annoying sometimes. i mean i know sometimes we all do it, i'm pretty sure it's human nature but people who compulsively do it have a problem.
