Everyone else, that is a regular on here, I've seen post and contribute as part of the scene here on Socal said it was nothing short of amazing and the club is great. period.

I'm not having a swipe at you and I don't know you personally, but I think you need to have a bit of a relaity check.

You got to see several world class DJ's and producers play to a great crowd in a club that really made an effort, all for a measly $15 and you seem to care about is the fact you didn't get free parking or free drinks?

Seriously? :wtf:

Try vanguard or avalon on a saturday night. Try $40 entrance with $25 parking with extortionate prices for drinks.

I don't think you know how good you've got it here in LA and while I get the fact you had a coupon and it's a case of honor/trust etc, you can park ANYWHERE within 2 blocks (300 yards) for the club and there are no parking restrictions on any of the side streets.

As for volume? It's a club. It's meant to be loud :p

I was there, so I have a pretty good recollection of my experience...and it wasn't all just about me. As we hopefully soon exit "The worst recession since the Great Depression," times are really tough on some people right now. One of my friends who relied on the comps being offered left the club even before Andy Moor even came on since he just didn't have any money left.

As for other clubs, if a club charges $50 at the door and $20 for parking, that's their right, as long as they don't lead people on otherwise. I may not go there if it's too expensive, but if they're upfront about it, then who's to argue? I'm not intending to make a price comparison between Circus and other clubs.

I already mentioned how Vanguard kept advertising "$15 parking right next to the club" and then charging $20 for months after this situation was brought up to some promoters. The parking lots right next to Avalon have these long driveways and there's no sign anywhere that shows how much it is. Once you get in the lot and have 6 cars behind you, then they tell you it's $35! That kind of stuff just pisses me off and makes the night not as good of an experience as it otherwise might be.

So all I'm saying is just be upfront and truthful whenever promoting or advertising something, and customers will come back wanting more. Burn them, and you may lose them for some time, maybe for good. I wasn't given any explanation at all for why the postcard wasn't being honored and the parking people actually seemed kinda rude about it.

I have been to Circus more times than there are weeks in a year (maybe days in a year?), and have left many great reviews with pics and videos. When I feel some constructive criticism is useful, I throw that in there too.

As for parking alternatives, I work within a mile of Circus during the day, and I would not recommend that anyone park outside Hollywood club parking lots at night (especially if going alone). Several TA's have been mugged doing so, one was even a club promoter putting flyers on cars outside of Vanguard.

As for the volume, yeah a club is meant to be loud. If it is so loud that people wearing earplugs still get ringing in their ears, then it is just too effen loud! These comments about the volume come from months where many TA's here on this forum were asking for the volume to be adjusted to a safer level. You wouldn't believe how many people have thanked me for standing up and saying something about it. I know some people feel invincible and all, but facts say otherwise...

"The Royal National Institute for Deaf People (RNID) recently launched a club noise awareness campaign in Great Britain after a RNID survey found that 62% of regular clubbers have symptoms of hearing loss. RNID reports that the numbers of young people exposed to dangerous noise levels has tripled since the early 80's. It also found that tinnitus rates among young people have increased three fold during that same time period. "We are roller-coasting towards an epidemic of hearing loss in middle rather than older age," says RHID's Chief Executive James Strachan."

As for the music, I did enjoy Andy's set a lot. I wish the closing DJ's had played a more uplifting set, I think more of the crowd would have stayed to enjoy it. I had a pretty good time, but I would have had a much better time if I didn't have to argue with the parking people over the flyers that were everywhere at Circus a few weeks ago offering free parking on August 1st with Andy Moor, etc. It was their own flyer, not something I photoshopped at home... Seriously? :wtf:

I was also really happy to see so many people at Circus, but still can't shake the impression that they kind of took advantage of some people because of it...I would like to make a good club even better, and that's why I share these thoughts and take the stones rather than just being quiet about it and pretending nothing ever happened... :nervous:

Well said!

I had a wonderful night overall... and I'm so glad that Circus finally found its feet after so long (I'm really looking forward to August 22nd and the Thrillseekers). Many of my friends who experienced the old Spundae were comparing last night to 2005-2006.

There isn't any harm in pointing out areas that could use improvement. If one person expresses a concern on this forum, you should expect that many others feel the same way. Our intentions are good, not malicious.

That's going to be a great night! Make that a great day since we will be hitting the Tribal Jungle Cruise during the day.

I'm not attacking you, I was just saying you're first post was full of negativity in stark contrast to everyone else's glowing recommendations for the club.

The thing is, by not letting it go (the parking thing) you let a 5 minute arguments taint your whole night ("would have had a better time if I didn't have to argue with the parking people").

but. ....relying heavily on handouts/coupons is never a good thing and if you're really that flat broke that you truly can't afford $25 to go out then don't go - you must really have other priorities that need sorting first before thinking about going clubbing, right?

As for clubs charging what they want? Yes, of course they can but people vote with their feet - I've not been back to avalon since Sharam played and they charged $40 for what was widely regarded as a sub par performance. I think we all should be thankful that Circus put on such awesome lineups for $15 entry!! Andy moor $15? Thrillseekers $15? John Askew $15 JAYTECH $15? :eyes:

There's no other promoters bringing this to LA right now (except for Compression) so even if it's not prefect, it's still better than 99%.

But it's good that you try to make a difference and give them feedback to improve wherever possible, but just bear in mind they're doing a great job.

As for the volume (being a sound engineer by trade) I think if you've already got 35db reduction plugs in and still get ringing in your ears, then sorry, but there's no way it can the sound system being too loud for "most people" - it just means you are over sensitive and have a predisposition to tinnitus/sensitivity issues. Even a concert system only goes to 115db *maybe* 120db, meaning what you're hearing with your plugs is 80 to 85 db. That's only about as loud as traffic and not even as as loud as your hairdryer. And I'm pretty sure the club system is not as loud as a rock concert line array system.....
So yes, I can completely understand why you need to be quite careful - I'm really scared of hearing damage myself as I make my livelihood from hearing, so I'm just verycareful.

But, as for never parking "outside of a lot" near the club?.

I do it. Every single day.

I live less than two blocks from the club and can say it's as safe as just about anywhere in LA (having just moved from Santa Monica).

Yes, at night up towards sunset and around the dark back streets behind Avalon/Vanguard, it can get sketchy, but around circus it's a complete non issue. The area is crawling with police and police helicopters and you're less than 4 blocks from HanPark, which is one of the wealthiest areas in LA.

Just for the record, I didn't have ringing in my ears wearing 35db earplugs. Another TA who was there the same night did have ringing in the ears wearing ER20's. I experienced some discomfort in my right ear while wearing HEAROS 32db NRR that I usually don't get most nights out at clubs.

Also keep in mind that the actual NRR of any earplug is highly dependent on how well it is fitted into the ears. Rarely does anyone achieve the actual NRR rating shown on the package. To get a bit more technical:

------------------------------------

Source: http://www.hearingreview.com/issues.../2007-03_07.asp

It has been demonstrated that labeled NRRs based on the ANSI S3.19-1974 formula show little resemblance to actual protection achieved in typical real-world conditions.7 Example: Clinical measurements of properly inserted ER-20s indicate that these earplugs provide an average of 20 dB attenuation across frequencies, but the labeled NRR of ER-20 earplugs is 12 dB. The required formula used to determine NRR includes an adjustment for individual variability and for those persons who don’t wear hearing protection as instructed. NRRs for foam earplugs are artificially high (most users obtain less attenuation than the NRR label indicates7) and NRRs for ER-20 earplugs are artificially low (most users obtain more attenuation than the label indicates1).

...The NRS for the ER-20 earplugs is 14 dB (“low value” which 80% of users should be able to exceed) to 20 dB (“high value” which highly motivated users may be able to achieve). The 6 dB range between these values was the smallest range for all 20 hearing protectors measured, indicating less variability and better reliability with flat attenuation earplugs.

The effectiveness of foam earplugs depends on how well they're inserted and sealed. If less than 60% deep, then the reduction can be 10db or more less than the rated NRR (source: http://www.worksafesask.ca/files/ilo/ppe05ae.html

------------------------------------

When reading the above, keep in mind that for every 3db increase in the sound level, safe exposure time is reduced by half, so when volumes are loud even 3-6db makes a huge difference.

I would like to move any further discussion of nightclub volumes and hearing protection to this thread

---------> http://www.tranceaddict.com/forums/...ghlight=hearnet

which is dedicated to the subject. I only ask that anyone read what's there before posting something that's already explained on the first couple of pages.

I'm done with the rest of the discussion and have made my points. :)

Excellent pics Michelle! You are very talented IMO. That was an incredibly fun night and I can't wait to go back. Ernesto's "Grateful Dead" drinks worked out quite nicely. Thanks for sharing all the pics :) :) :) :) :)
