i'll admit glowsticks and all that add to the culture and "experience" of what stuff like a "rave" is. without it, a "rave" would be a club... for better or worse.
as for appreciation of the "art of glowsticking", the novelty for most of us wore off 5 minutes after we first saw it. just like a lot of arguably very talented and impressive street performers' juggling acts, hula-hooping, or that hippie juggling-a-stick-with-two-sticks thing... it's cool for a tourist walking down fisherman's wharf, but even they don't stick around for more than a few minutes. and sure, those skills will be a hit in the tiny community of followers, but the same could be said for something like "yo-yo'ers"(?)... add a couple LEDs to their yo-yos and you've got yourself a glowsticker, no?

glowsticking is to art as bowling is to pro sports
if it weren't for the "rave culture" at all the raves, a rave would be an edm concert
much like sasha & digweed @ the warfield or daft punk @ the greek theatre--both in my top 3 18+ massives of all time

fyi - I took that video, from the VIP booth on the 2nd floor of CIRCUS. That night was amazing, and those glowsticks helped...
I don't know which side of the fence I'm on. Maybe I side what DaveT was saying is Ruby Skye's policy :"glow sticks ok but no light shows". I think for a club to ban lightsticks is to say " you" to all real trance lovers. I love trance, and thus I love lights. Sorry, it simply looks cool. Any kind of light - laser - glowstick = trance vibe. I don't necessarily like "glowstringing" but I like when people hold lightsticks and dance with them. "E" aside, there is something that ties lights with trance, at a very basic level, thats why good trance events (such as those in europe) go ALL OUT w/ LASERS and LIGHTING. Because thats how you create the "trance vibe". W/ all that, and glowsticks in the hands of dancers help in that. IF you don't like glowsticks I think you are either getting too old or are too jaded. I agree w/ what R!CH is saying about having 20 year olds dressing like 20 year olds. (i.e. no pokemon backpacks and trix bunny t-shirts). And of course, no 30 year olds should be sucking on a pacifier! But all this can be fixed under "club dress code" :D :D :D
But, lets not forget why people go out on the weekends in the 1st place. We all do it to relieve stress, get away from it all, and if you start making pre-conceptions about other people that you meet at club or what not, you are screwing it up for yourself right off the bat. Thats why I encourage you all to simply think positive about what you see. Sure there is a grip of irresponsible people out there that are way too ed up, too much drinking or drugs, but glowsticks have nothing to do with that. I highly disagree with that R!CH, because I glow stick and I'm always sober. :D
Now, let's be serious here. Glowsticks, and light objects in general add vibe and positive energy to any dance event. That includes clubs. In fact, glowsticks in the hands of a crowd in an EDM (especially trance) event are equivalent to people holding up their lighters in a rock concert. It just makes that event rock so much more. Otherwise, its too dark and ty. sorry, but true. If you don't like glowsticks in the hands of people dancing , you maybe getting too old and jaded. SERIOUSLY NOW! . I'M REPEATING MYSELF!!!
That means I'm all done here. Tkx. come again! :D

It makes an event neater if they are disperced throughout the place. LIke they had at the thrillseekers.
And the point is that to the average clubber, the most important clubbers for clubs to survive, the site of glow sticks bring the vibe down and is negative to them because they start thinking they are in a place full of e-tards because that's how the mass-media pictures that kind of stuff to the public. Because that's the stereo-type. WE, the hardcore clubbers...the TAers... know that's not often the case, but we are in the minority.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. Lights of any variety go hand in hand with EDM, and add to the overall.
I honestly never knew people despised glowsticks until now... hilarious.
People are funny though, and sometimes it doesn't take much to distract them from having a good time. For the longest time I refused to go to the movies because hearing people talk or eat during a movie would drive me nuts. Even if noise makers were trying to be quiet & I could barely hear them, it would still distract me from the picture big time. Eventually I got over it by realizing how ridiculous I was being expecting pure silence in a public place, and now I no longer dread going to see a film. Now I really enjoy the crowd reaction/interaction, and feel it's a vital part of my movie watching experience.

One of the funniest/saddest parts of glowsticking is when a guy tries to pick up on girls doing it. You can see the look of confusion/horror on the girls' faces as a sweaty, nerdy looking guy flashes multi-color glowsticks in their faces and then when he tries to pull off the ULTIMATE TRICK, he drops them and they walk away in disgust. :disbelief

I don't care for glow sticks, but also don't mind them.. However it seems like glowsticks are HUGE at Los Angeles Clubs.. Look at this video
The only time that I seen that MANY glowsticks at a CLUB was when Blurr had his MIDNIGHT glowstick ceremony a few years back at 1015..
Remember David??
There were so many glowsticks that night because they were thrown out into the crowd over the course of the night. People were just dancing with them in there hands, not giving light shows all over the place. It was all good fun.
On a side note, I have seen glowsticks at all kinds of clubs other than trance including top 40 and hip hop clubs. Its pretty mainstream these days. While I agree that CTFO'd people getting light shows looks bad, people using glowsticks, etc as dancing props is cool with me.
When did clubbers become so uptight? About the only things that really bother me at clubs are meth head douchbags, washers, and people just way too f'd up. And those are not exclusive to trance events by any means and are probably worse at the other clubs. You cannot compare the crackiness of Avalon to Circus.

There was a cat that used to hang out at 1015 circa 1997/98 for Nikita. Kai, I think his name was.
He would dress in a black body suit and have glow braceletts forming his body so when he would dance on stage it looked like a glow stick figure. Always thought that was pretty cool to see; altered or not.
Haven't picked up glow sticks in a looong while, as I am pretty much in the clubs and while they DO enhance the scenery party or club, there are those that should and those that should not. Getting hit in the head with flying glow objects is NOT fun. (practice!)
I do break them out for camping. ;) My niece (3) loves 'em and I got her dancing to Pistolwhip by Joshua Ryan. (its an easy one) LOL...is that bad???

:D
My point wasn't about whether you done it or not and I never said anything about you never glowsticking before. My point was about you judging other people that do it, when you do it yourself.
I didn't say anything to Rich making that comment, because he doesn't dance with lights
and dancing with photons, globes or road flares doesn't make it different enough for you to agree with something judgemental of an action you do yourself. It's called a contradiction

I haven't seen Blurr with them in a few years. People's opinion can change over time.
And he was never bad with them.

It doesn't bother me that people dance with them whether they are good or not. If that person is happy dancing with them. Great
I'd rather have a person who dances with glowsticks at a party than someone who's there to start trouble

if people are dancing with glow sticks, as in moving their body and feet to the rhythm of the beat, i don't think anyone would have a problem with them. the thing is what do you see most of the time you see glow sticks? crackhead light shows. i don't care to hear any more anecdotal evidence of otherwise, the perception in the mainstream and even amongst diehard clubbers exists because this is the case.
