If he's well-cast and plays the role to perfection, how can you argue that his performance is bad? |
Because if he's well-cast, he's not required to play a role. He just has to be "Keeanu Reeves".
A good performance is one where the actor has to actually, well... ACT! |

Off the top of my head best:
Ed Norton - American History X
Daniel Day-Lewis - There Will Be Blood
Laura Linney - The Savages
Dustin Hoffman - Rain Man
Brad Pitt - Babel
Leo DiCaprio - The Aviator
Morgan Freeman - The Shawshank Redemption |

Daniel Day Lewis - in everything he does, really
|
I've never seen anyone as angry as him in There Will Be Blood. Even when the focus wasn't on him in a scene, he was the most interesting to watch.

I get what you're saying. But if you're cast to be a brain dead muser and that happens to be your personality, how does the amount of effort you need to put in to achieve that end factor in? |

| part of being a good actor is not allowing yourself to take crappy roles in badly written movies. |

Best:
Just a few that have not been mentioned already... I think DiNero in Raging Bull was a pretty damn good acting performance. Also Daniel Day Lewis in Gangs of New York was great. Plus, I thought DiCaprio's job in The Departed was excellent. I'm sure there's more but that's what just popped in my head. |

Tons of great actors out there... Ralph Fiennes is one that always seems to deliver.
Relevant to the discussion: Actor Believability Matrix
Worst acting in a movie across the board... Everyone in Ghost Rider! |

Christopher Walken in Balls of Fury?
I heard a rumor that his policy is to accept any role offered to him, which sounds ridiculous, but I can't think of any other reason he'd take that one. It's not like he needs the money that badly. |
