Well, I've been watching "The Shining" (1980, directed by Stanley Kubrick) for the first time today and all I can say is that Shelley Duvall's (plays Wendy, wife of main character) acting is hurting my eyes, i.e. is awful. The acting in the entire movie is pretty bad imho. It is void of life and too scripted (like in cheap Russian detective series lol). That being said, I think acting started to become less theatrical and more life-like about in the late 80's.
Name the best and worst acting you've seen in a movie:toocool: |
I agree. Her acting is utterly atrocious. I'm stunned how they allowed that to go to theatres. I was embarrassed just watching it. |

I think you're confusing Stanley Kubrick's style with bad acting. He went to deliberate lengths to make his films dissonant and strange. In A Clockwork Orange there are deliberate continuity errors, for example.

I get what you're saying. But if you're cast to be a brain dead muser and that happens to be your personality, how does the amount of effort you need to put in to achieve that end factor in? |
If we're talking about ability. Then being handed a role that matches who you are makes any ability you DO have meaningless.
You're not 'performing' you're simply being who you are, and all of the work has been done for you. It's like casting Adam Sandler as a fool with a temper. Type-cast actors aren't performing at all, they're simply reading their lines. If you want good performances, then you need to look at actors who are actually ACTING or PERFORMING. Actors that take on a number of different roles, and actually do well at them.
Christopher Walken
Edward Norton
Tom Hanks
Johny Depp
Sean Penn
Are a few examples of actors that I consider to be great at doing that.
Keeanu Reaves? Naaaaaaaaah. |

I agree with what you are saying; that's why people need to differentiate 'actors' from 'movie stars'. People like Keanu Reeves, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Vin Diesel...they have a screen presence that compensates for their lack of emotionality and/or charisma.
Movie stars are meant for certain pictures when compared to actors. Keanu Reeves would have been absolutely ridiculous in a movie like Milk, playing the role of Sean Penn. However, on the other hand, Sean Penn would have looked absolutely ridiculous as Neo in the Matrix. Celebrities have their respective places.
Movie stars vs. actors. |
