there are less and less finns in the nhl every year...although the khl does not improve your odds either.

no

and keep in mind that only the best go to nhl & khl. the ones that are just above average end up in switzerland or sweden, so you can imagine what an amateur-league we have atm :p

but i still dare say that when it comes to goalies, ain't nobody gonna touch us :)

btw.. who would you (ALL OF YOU) pick as finlands starting goalie in the olympics?

i have some minor issues regarding kipper due to his past in the nationals :p

i was about to make a thread for vancouver, but then i remembered that i suck.
Schadenfreude
quebec goalies beat finland goalies hands down sorry:p

it is not even close either.

that being said, team finland would be insane not to start Backstrom.

rinni, kipper are good, although kipper is getting tier and tier every year.

are you honestly trying to say that finland has a goalie the likes of brodeur, luongo, or fleury? you crazy man.

tell me why a finnish goalie has never won a stanley cup then:p

40% of the nhl's goalies come from one province...not even a country;)
bamski
well i can't counter your patrick roy defense, canada is the motherland and in general they can't be beat. just look at the general numbers for licensed players per country, i think you must have like a million players to one of ours :p

good point about the championships, kipper was close. keep in mind that finnish goalies had not been trusted with the position of starting goalie until 2002 when pasi made it in atlanta, only to have his knees wrecked and ending his career15 years before it was due. he was drafted by the the thrashers as their sixth-round pick, #189 overall, in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. so it's not exactly easy for a foreigner to make it as a goalie over there :p

ps me also picks backs :)

i see potential and possibilities, i wanna see players damnit.

it's as simple as this, we raise, you enjoy.

and every spring all our best teams lose their best players to khl etc.. mid-ing-season. imagine your team had a goalie that won you like 27 games out of the first 30, only to be bought by the russians.. mid-ing-season. even the swedish league is 20 times tougher than we are atm. and the worst part is that we simply can't compete when it comes to salaries. :(

come watch some EIHL and then tell me what you have is bad :p

i still think that finland produces better goalies than any other position, so at least in some sense we do agree a little bit.

If finland hopes to have any shot at a medal this year, it is going to happen in goal, because the rest of the team is aging and the lineup i have seen is probably one of the weaker ones in years. A hot goalie can take any team far though, so i would not say that a medal is completely out of the question, it will only be very difficult due to the high quality of the other teams in the tourney.

Torino can be an example of this, if you can get play from the starter similar to how Antero Niittymäki played in 2006 then i can see Finland claiming a possible bronze.

If the final is anything other than Canada vs Russia, i think everyone will be massively surprised, myself included. Putting the home ice advantage aside, these 2 teams are head and shoulders above the rest. I don't see the same choking by older players like in Torino...bot teams got younger and more dynamic imo.

if i had to pick another dark horse contender for a medal, i'll go with slovakia. They have a better team then the czhechs, are quicker, have an underated goalie in Halak, who can steal a few games, and Zdeno Chara will be a huge obstacle for any team they face.

Slovakia is the team with the most to prove, that no one expects anything from. This could be disaster for anyone who takes them lightly.

The Americans have a shot at a medal as well, due to having the hottest goalie in the world right now in Ryan Miller.

The Swedes are weaker than in the past, so i am going to go out on a limb and say that they are most certainly on the outside looking in this year.

The great part about international hockey right now is that the caliber of countries that were once pushovers has increased drastically. The swiss or the germans can not be expected to win anything, but i certainly believe that one of these teams will upset a favourite at some point in the tourney. With 1 game eliminations, anything and everything is possible.

Russia (power house, the cdn vs cccp will most likely be the most watched game of hockey history between the sport's 2 biggest rivals.)

Russian camp roster:

Goaltenders: Ilya Bryzgalov (Phoenix Coyotes, NHL), Simeon Varlamov (Washington Capitals, NHL), Alexander Eremenko (Salavat Yulayev Ufa, RUS), Evgeni Nabokov (San Jose Sharks, NHL).

Defencemen: Vitali Atyushov (Metallurg Magnitogorsk, RUS), Vitali Vishnevsky (Lokomotiv Yaroslavl, RUS), Anton Volchenkov (Ottawa Senators, NHL), Sergei Gonchar (Pittsburgh Penguins, NHL), Denis Grebeshkov (Edmonton Oilers, NHL), Alexei Zhitnik (Dynamo Moscow, RUS), Sergei Zubov (Dallas Stars, NHL), Dmitri Kalinin (Salavat Yulayev Ufa, RUS), Maxim Kondratiev (Salavat Yulayev Ufa, RUS), Konstantin Korneyev (CSKA Moscow, RUS), Andrei Markov (Montreal Canadiens, NHL), Ilya Nikulin (Ak Bars Kazan, RUS), Vitali Proshkin (Salavat Yulayev Ufa, RUS), Oleg Tverdovsky (Salavat Yulayev Ufa, RUS), Fedor Tyutin (Columbus Blue Jackets, NHL).

Forwards: Evgeny Artyukhin (Tampa Bay Lightning, NHL), Maxim Afinogenov (Buffalo Sabres, NHL), Konstantin Gorovikov (SKA St. Petersburg, RUS), Pavel Datsyuk (Detroit Red Wings, NHL), Danis Zaripov (Ak Bars Kazan, RUS), Sergei Zinoviev (Salavat Yulayev Ufa, RUS), Alexei Kovalev (Ottawa Senators, NHL), Ilya Kovalchuk (Atlanta Trashers, NHL), Viktor Kozlov (Salavat Yulayev Ufa, RUS), Nikolai Kulemin (Toronto Maple Leafs, NHL), Evgeni Malkin (Pittsburgh Penguins, NHL), Alexei Morozov (Ak Bars Kazan, RUS), Alexander Ovechkin (Washington Capitals, NHL), Alexander Radulov (Salavat Yulayev Ufa, RUS), Oleg Saprykin (Dynamo Moscow, RUS), Alexander Semin (Washington Capitals, NHL), Alexei Tereschenko (Ak Bars Kazan, RUS), Sergei Fedorov (Metallurg Magnitogorsk, RUS), Alexander Frolov (Los Angeles Kings, NHL).

Team Usa (I don't think they have a great team, but as mentionned before, they have the hottest goalie in the world right now who might win both the vezina and the leauge mvp for single handedly carrying the buffalo sabres all year. If he can make buffalo a contender, he can make team usa one. If he doesn't step up it will be between finland and sweden most likely.)

i honestly don't think we have a realistic shot at a medal, not even bronze. as you said, this is the worst team we've had for ages. we have absolutely NO defensemen that could compete at the same level as all of the better countries, from slovakia to canada. a nice bonus is that teemu might be out, same goes for t.ruutu, lehtinen, and now timonen.. saku is barely hanging in there

i do think sweden has a shot, but i felt like saying slovakia just because i think they are the most improved team of all the countries.

you do know that koivu is injured right?:p

hopefully for you guys he will still be able to play.

i think selanne has a broken jaw...confirm or deny?
Schadenfreude
