Why is there so much hate on music forums?

I mean, seriously, it's music! Why do we let it get under our skins?
And, for the record, I'm not just talking about TA. It happens everywhere. It's just that many other forums do a better job of controlling it. And, actually, I think that this is probably one of the less hostile environments, especially considering that it's self-moderated (for now). |

| Most people who care enough about music to post about it frequently on a site are passionate about it, which means that disagreements will be passionate as well. Honestly, TA is quite tame compared to boards based around topics like politics and religion, for example. Yes there are a lot of insults thrown around, but you will get that in any forum where people both care deeply about the topic and disagree about it. No big deal. |

I can tell you from my personal standpoint, it irks me when someone comes in and says "you can't make good music with FL Studio" or "FL Studio sucks, it's for noobs", or "FL Studio can only get you so far" etc etc etc...(ie: one of our recent threads here) because it's like people won't even give me a chance and listen and (sadly) I get that enough in real life. So it's irritating when people say that, but that's just me.
But my point of view aside, I'm going to agree with MrJBJ. I think everyone here is pretty passionate about music, this passion brings out the beast in all of us. And when an idiot comes in an makes an ass out of himself, the beast will rear it's ugly head and all war breaks loose. |

above 2 posts have got it
when there are 2 really passionate people they're bound to clash...
like the muslims and the christians throughout history...
except they hacked each other up with swords, while we use the intrawebz... |

A lot of it may also come from personal frustration. It takes a while to get to a stage where you're able to create quality music.
So people will sometimes blame their tools and express their frustration. Or sometimes people have moved from one synth/DAW to another, and think of their new synth/DAW as "better", and may not fully take into consideration their added years of experience, or that it may be better for their personal style, but that the other synth/DAW is better for someone else.
Most of us have been through these frustrations, but not everyone comes onto forums and unleashes their personal frustrations on the world.
For the most part, this forum is fine, and with a good mod it should be pretty good. |

i think mostly because its not "real" life.Fair enough if people are passionate but it doesnt excuse rudeness or just being a downright nob!
when ppl throw actual harsh insults around i find that they usually think they're pretty big behind there computer screens and seem like that would be in person.
or they're just cocky/dumb/rude/stupid in real life and they're like that on here too.
i think all the anger is on these forums. it ruins ALOT of topics
usually you can trace it all back to a few ppl haha :D |

Yeah, I agree with JDC. Regarding passion, I think it's entirely possible to be passionate about something, yet still have respectful differences of opinion without resorting to name-calling, etc. Now, don't get me wrong - I'm not saying that I'm above it and I've certainly had my ugly moments on TA and other forums, but over the last year or so, I've found that it's usually not worth the frustration of getting stuck in the middle of flame wars. Besides, I'm an old dude and my doc says I need to lower my blood pressure. ;)
Regarding the "retards" that RichieV mentioned, yeah, they certainly do exist as evidenced by the moronic noob du jour, but I think I've finally just given up on trying to reason or argue with them. It never settles anything and often times both sides end up looking a little foolish. It's usually pretty clear when a person is talking out his backside, so I just don't see the sense in arguing - let them make their foolish comment and destroy their own credibility, then move on. But, I'm sure that a lot of people like to take the opportunity to bash them for several pages simply for the sheer joy of it (not judging - I may have been guilty of that once or twice as well... ).
OK, I think I'm babbling now, so I'll just shut up and get back to my studio... |

I was going to post this SAME thread tonight but DIDN'T cause I'm so fed up of attitudes on this board if one more person does it I'm just never signing back on.
I'm a member at a bodybuilding board that has 108,000 members. And yes there is more passion in the political/religion based forums, BUT it is still largely different from this board imo.
For one reason, there is no consequences on this board. To some people that means free reign to other people that means they still need to have respect.
I consistently get into it with Egos cause the first thing he ever said to me made me realize what a pos he is. You DO NOT come at people with a condescending attitude and make fun of them for asking something they DON'T KNOW.
But for some reason he took it upon himself to think that I should have known, and that I was some sort of idiot cause I didn't.
THAT is the that urks me. If it had happened during an emotionally driven debate, thats different. He came out before I had said anything to him, completely condescending and rude as fvck.
And the ONLY reason I think he acted like that, hes because he knows noones gonna ban him for it. So passionate or not, some people always need to continually validate their ego, and untill a mod corrects it for them, they will most likely not correct it themself.
I use to have problems with other members that blew over rather quick. I think even at some point I had it out with jive, but that was a situation where I was equally at fault.
When however I start a thread and get bashed and treated like an idiot, by regulars, thats what makes me forget about the notion of peace completely.
Yeh its a forum, but so what? Does that mean you don't have to treat people with respect anymore? Thats what I consider true coward type . I could say the DUMBEST things in the world, troll my ass to hell, and still not consider myself as low as someone who attacks someone for not knowing something.
If its a question thats asked everyday I can see telling someone to search, but the question was never asked before. Then other people just like to joke too much when others arent in the mood and get insulted by it.
If I don't wanna crack jokes I dont wanna crack jokes. Plain and simple. |

Its very easy to hide behind a computer screen in the ether that is the internet, half of the flaming/insults etc would never happen face to face.
Also people are passionate and without moderation they let loose, ego is a hell of a thing, especially when mu first point is taken into consideration. |

Nerds have big egos in internet (its their world).
And like Moby said EDM musicians are all nerds, theres the answer for your question. |

"could"
ps. nice try at sigpwning me. if that's the best you can come up with, you're clearly clutching at straws. in your case, it isn't very hard for the rest of us.
fyi, armin van buuren did a shout out to TT during the 5-year asot anniversary show. why would a famous dj and record label owner give praise to a music piracy site? i'll let you draw your own conclusions from that, genius. ;) |
