DJs play other people's music and sometimes their own.

DJs use records to play their music, live performers use musical equipment such as sequencers, drum machines etc to create music live. I'm struggling to understand how you don't get this.

Selecting what records/tracks you play be it your own or someone elses is just one aspect of being a DJ IMO.
