The digital release of the album contains two tracks: disc one & disc two. He wants to bring back the "feel" of an album.

Doo Doo album. Le Nocturne De Lumiere and Rose of Jericho are the only standouts. Sucks because I was really looking forward to this one after the disappointments from TCM (Divided By Night) and WOW (We Love Machine). Here's hoping Hybrid delivers with "Disappear Here".
Regarding "These Hopeful Machines" I just can't believe that this was all BT could muster after delivering so consistently in the past. I know some folks didn't like the direction he took with MISL and audiences are still split on ET, but I enjoyed every album from Ima to TBU. This though...ugh. Save for the two tracks listed above THM is simply awful. |
Long-time BT fans aren't really split on ET...it is pretty much regarded as a stinker. The new one, though less offensive, is just bland. We Love Machine is a better album than this and hardly a bad entry as their fourth long player, just not as memorable as some would like. |

worst track: "the light in things"
how cookie-cutter was that? |

TBU was supposed to follow up ET but the original form of it was a double cd with some tracks even longer they are on TBU now.
Unfortunately the course of both TBU and THM got changed due to the mysterious multiple burglaries to BT's studio and loss of most original masters and whatever other issues he was having in his life at the time. |
i dont believe TBU was supposed to be changed, his studio got robbed while he was on tour for TBU. It was only stated that equipment related to TBU production was stolen. Though, I'm sure some THM material was on the TBU machines but he had backup copies. |

| I thought it was ET that was affected mainly due to the burglary, not as much TBU or THM |

| Theres a fairly lengthy review linked in my sig but overall I am annoyed that BT has decided to go this route with the album but having listened to it from start to finish a number of times now there's enough decent stuff on the album to make me listen again. |

Sound wise TBU wasn't supposed to be changed in any way but the initial idea for the release was a double cd with 4 tracks per disc and the dvd being only on a limited edition until it was decided to go with 1 cd+dvd instead. A 9+ minute track that was supposed to be the 8th track on the album, was dumped before it was finished.
Don't forget his studio was robbed twice, Dec '01 and Feb '07 and the first time indeed occurred before ET had been finished and properly backed up so materials for 5-6 tracks for ET were lost completely. The affect on ET was surprisingly much smaller than one would have believed after such loss as the album is still pretty much what BT wanted it to be. He managed to recreate the lost tracks bit by bit from the notes he'd been making, only main exception being the Peter Gabriel collab which couldn't be redone because Gabriel was too busy with other projects to return to the studio with BT again. The final album version of the Jody W./WOW collab PARIS ended up being slightly different from the initial version as well but the basis for the track is the same and I think the reason for the changes for PARIS are elsewhere. Jody had an early copy of the original version and he was playing it in his sets at the time so it wasn't completely lost anyway.
The second burglary itself didn't affect on TBU production wise as the album had been released in the US at that time already but it still caused some minor tweaks for the post production for the release in some other regions. The burglary and other issues BT was struggling with did have a huge impact on THM tho, not only delaying the album's release for about 3 years but also making the album to sound almost totally different than it was originally supposed to be. Only a couple of tracks for the album were properly backed up and even them were more of in-progress versions. BT just wanted to calm down people for telling nothing important production material had been lost to avoid getting ridiculed for a carbon copy repeat of the earlier burglary even with added security measures when in fact the truth was that material for many THM tracks were in fact lost. |

Or he wants to make it impossible to buy just individual tracks... |

Nice review. I haven't taken the time to sample the album (actually, I'm procrastinating because I fear I'll hate it), but your review encouraged me. I'm not interested in BT revisiting territory covered in Emotional Technology, but I'll give THM a listen.
Off topic, I noticed the use of the word "whilst" throughout your piece. Because I'm a writer, use of that word piqued my curiosity. Are you British by any chance? In the U.S., using the word whilst is uncommon. |

Yeah i'm English although I wouldn't say whilst is a common word here either, at least not in spoken English. Maybe more commonly used in written English here though. |
