this is a very valid point argued by many but it doesn't fit the tech model that has made Apple famous. the MB and MBPro lines do a good job at this as a full scale laptop. Only there would I be needing to multitask though. Portable is defined as on the go, revolutionized by Apple with their iProducts right? That in itself is probably the main reason why they've dumbed down their UI and logic, with the intent that you're taking your ipod on the go.
I think larger talking points are the no webcam on the front for video conferencing but we all know that 3G/4G or any carrier won't go for simply because they do not have the bandwidth to support it. Who does video conferencing good? Cisco, but they aren't OTA. |

But outside of reading, what is this thing good for "on the go"?
You can't use it as a music player. Is anyone going to carry around the thing as a massive iPod Touch with their headphones plugged in? No.
You can't use it to do any sort of work since it can't multitask. So the optional keyboard thing (which will probably cost a ripoff price since it's Apple) is pointless.
It can't be used as a camera.
Maybe videos then? Either way I still can't thing of a single reason why this product would be useful at all. |

I see this device being used most at home and maybe special places like subways and planes. The use I'm envisioning for it would be sitting at home in front of the TV while surfing the web, reading a book, and perhaps replacing the universal remote. It is great for cooking and looking up recipes and when it's not in use, it can be used as a picture frame. Ipad will not replace the laptop or the mobile phone.
Those looking for a camera on this device is forgetting that's not the intended use of it. It's not a giant iPhone. |

No Multitasking
This is a backbreaker. If this is supposed to be a replacement for netbooks, how can it possibly not have multitasking? Are you saying I can't listen to Pandora while writing a document? I can't have my Twitter app open at the same time as my browser? I can't have AIM open at the same time as my email? Are you kidding me? This alone guarantees that I will not buy this product.
No Cameras
No front facing camera is one thing. But no back facing camera either? Why the hell not? I can't imagine what the downside was for including at least one camera. Could this thing not handle video iChat?
Touch Keyboard
So much for Apple revolutionizing tablet inputs; this is the same big, ugly touchscreen keyboard we've seen on other tablets, and unless you're lying on the couch with your knees propping it up, it'll be awkward to use.
No HDMI/HD Video Out
Want to watch those nice HD videos you downloaded from iTunes on your TV? Too damned bad! If you were truly loyal, you'd just buy an AppleTV already.

No Flash
No Flash is annoying but not a dealbreaker on the iPhone and iPod Touch. On something that's supposed to be closer to a netbook or laptop? It will leave huge, gaping holes in websites. I hope you don't care about streaming video! God knows not many casual internet users do. Oh wait, nevermind, they all do.
Adapters, Adapters, Adapters
So much for those smooth lines. If you want to plug anything into this, such as a digital camera, you need all sorts of ugly adapters. You need an adapter for USB for god's sake. |

I've created an iPad simulator, by cutting a piece of paper to the correct size, placing a weighty stapler atop a CD case with the paper in between. This closely approximates the device. You can see it here running the Tic Tac Toe app (which supports both portrait and landscape modes). |
