Leaving in exactly 7 days (hitting Chicago first) and I have left most stuff to the last minute. I have been too embarrassed to ask the dumb, n00b questions, but I have no pride anymore.
Ok here goes...
1) Are there any TA meetups planned in Detroit? I've gotten lazy reading the threads & am wondering if I'm missing something.
2) I read somewhere online that there's an Android app for the festival. Can sometime point me to the link?
3) What shoes to wear? I want to buy a pair of lightweight sneakers & wear them dancing. Sneaks are okay for women at any venue, right?
4)Carrying stuff into the festival, part 1. I'm usually opposed to bringing a purse/bag on the dancefloor. I just cram all my crap into my pockets. But in this case, I might want to bring stuff in. But I'm traveling mostly alone so nobody will watch my stuff if I want to abandon it. How do I handle that? Do I have to carry what I bring the whole time? Or can I leave it somewhere and hope nobody steals my suntan lotion?
5) Carrying stuff into the festival, part 2. I'm confirming that they will confiscate all food & beverages brought to the festival. I'd like to sneak a granola bar in as a snack. Is that feasible? How thorough are the searches?
6) How to prepare for rain? If it rains, how do you best handle it? Do I need to worry about buying a rain poncho? Or it's best to not worry about it and dance in the rain?
7) Any advice for a first timer that you'd like to share?
Thanks. I can't wait for this trip although the anxiety that I am going to forget something important is intense. |

I am a first timer as well... but I can help you out a bit...
1) Are there any TA meetups planned in Detroit? I've gotten lazy reading the threads & am wondering if I'm missing something.
- I haven't seen anything yet... I know a lot the Toronto TAs will all be together but I havent seen an offical meet up. I hope someone puts something together.
2) I read somewhere online that there's an Android app for the festival. Can sometime point me to the link?
http://www.detroitluv.com/index.php?topic=57802.0
3) What shoes to wear? I want to buy a pair of lightweight sneakers & wear them dancing. Sneaks are okay for women at any venue, right?
Black Pumas ftw :) But I cant imagine any of the venues having a strict dress code. I'd bring 2 pairs - incase a pair gets ruined and its also nice for your feet to feel 'change' lol
- Can't really help you here. I have a waist bag that I bought in Chinatown (toronto) thats really cute since I hate actually carrying things. Try to find something like that.
5) Carrying stuff into the festival, part 2. I'm confirming that they will confiscate all food & beverages brought to the festival. I'd like to sneak a granola bar in as a snack. Is that feasible? How thorough are the searches?
- I heard its pretty easy to sneak things in. They searches arent that intense. Bringing granola bars or flasks are pretty easy and common to sneak in.
6) How to prepare for rain? If it rains, how do you best handle it? Do I need to worry about buying a rain poncho? Or it's best to not worry about it and dance in the rain?
- Apparently it rains every year. Not I'd like an answer for this too. At least our hotel isnt too far so I can always go change.
7) Any advice for a first timer that you'd like to share?
- As I mentioned I am a first timer ;)

It looks as though most of my days will be spent at the Beatport stage. There's some stuff on Torino, the Vitamin Water stage, and Made in Detroit. The Red Bull stage mostly disappoints until Monday (aside from 1-2 acts on Sunday)
Kind of disappointed that Monday looks to be one of the strongest days, because I know people will be still at Old Miami |

I know some answers have been given but here is my input and it isn't my first time but I did skip last year so there could be a little difference here and there.
1. If it hasn't been asked yet on TOTA, I'll ask about a meetup.
2. has been answered
3. there is no dress code at all for women, don't worry, I'll be wearing sandals, shoes, boots
4. you should have a small shoulder crossover bag because anything left can be stolen, there is going to be a water balloon fight so if you plan to participate bring a ziplock bag for electronics and balloons for Sunday at 4:20 at the fountain
5. yes they will confiscate everything like that, the searches are sometimes heavier sometimes lighter, hide it because even in a light search, they will take it if they find it, stuff like gum is ok though
6. how do you feel in the rain, that is the answer, personally if it is warm and it rains I am fine but cold rain can ruin your weekend, bring a cheapo little poncho that folds small
7. the biggest is cabs- act like you know where you're going even if you don't by setting the gps before you get a cab with directions, make sure they turn the meter on when you get in, do not do flat fare and if they try to force it say you only have a few dollars, do not travel alone at night pairs are good since some afters are in shady places, Greek Town has good food in comparison to other areas, drink a lot of water, take disco naps, drinks are very strong in Detroit remember that before you get wasted by mistake |
