So why should we continue to pay our taxes when we dont even know where our taxes are going?! IMO it should be a law in any country for the government to write a report, clearly stating how much taxes go into health, admin, weapons development, etc. But I'm guessing if that happened, the government would either lie about where the taxes are going or it would cause a lot of rupture in society. |
Since you're such an Internet Rebel, don't pay your taxes.
I'm all for our politicians showing fiscal responsibility, but this one is a total a non-issue - with a minimum 5-day work week, we're talking $12/day for transport, which for someone in his position is a pittance. He has a yearly budget that is paid for via taxation, and he came in well under his allotted amount - forty-some thousand dollars is a drop in the bucket relative to the city's entire budget. He's also has stated that he uses public transport regularly. It would be nice is everyone could roll in like Rob Ford with his $0 claim, but at the same time, it's not like he's hiring a private fleet to ferry him and his ballin' crew all 'round town, so why all the hooplah?
While I realise the TTC and particularly Giambrone are easy targets these days, it sounds like a lot of you (along with the media that made this an issue) are just griping for the sake of griping. Slow news week? |

I don't see the big deal here. My employer pays for my travel....the people are his employer and they should pay for his business travel. |
+1
People in this thread calling this a scandal is :haha: |

If this were a private co, Adam's salary would not be considered outrageous. It would be on the low end probably. It's a huge role. |
What if it was a private company and the CEO of Coke was caught with a fridge full of Pepsi?
Or even better yet, how the CEOs of the big auto companies were forced to drive to washington in their own brand of car for bail out hearings since auto execs taking a private jet was bad optics?
Does everyone miss the point that THE HEAD OF THE TTC HAD TO RELEGATE TO THE USE OF A TAXI BECAUSE THE TTC WAS INCONVENIENT FOR HIM?
Thats the scandal. Not $3000, not expensing a taxi. Not banging some girl. The fact that the TTC head himself often thought the TTC to be inconvenient for his own use. And its not like this guy lives uptown either.
Perhaps its time for these folks to admit that the TTC sucks and start improving it. And i mean seriously improving it. Perhaps its time to admit that the car DOES have a role in this city and instead of trying to choke vehicles out of downtown, we should accomodate them until the TTC is worthy enough to be a competitor to the car and not just the last resort of those who cant afford a car.
Again, this is about the BIG picture. Not $3000 |

Do you expect the head of VIA Rail to take the train each and everytime he travels throughout Canada?
I don't think anyone is arguing the fact that the TTC is , but to expect Adam to use it each and everytime he goes ANYWHERE is ridiculous. |

Parhaps you are right...
But, There are hundreds of thousands in toronto who are expected to do just that. Not only that, but these councilors (and mayor) preach daily about how we should always take the TTC or bike or walk and that cars are evil. If it wasnt for the hypocrisy from these folks, perhaps theyd deserve the break you are suggesting.
I dont see the head of Via on the news almost daily telling people that cars and airplanes are evil. Or worse yet, designing policies that work against cars and planes while actually using them. |

One last thing. I just read that one of Giambrones taxi expenses was to get home right after filming an episode of "on the rocket". Its a tv show that takes place on a streetcar designed to take questions from riders and promote the TTC as the best way to get around.
It doesnt get more blatantly hypocritical than that! |

In many circumstances, taxis and transit are complementary services, not competing ones.
I didn't even read the rest of your post because that was such a bad analogy. |

I think I'm the only one who gets & agrees what Jay's saying in this thread. Something that doesn't happen often.
Most of you are viewing this through 'corporate' eyes and are incapable of seeing the bigger picture and what his actions imply regarding the service itself. Maybe if he were to be late for more meetings or get stuck in service delays on his way home more often, he might be inclined to push harder to get things to change.
Some of us don't have the option of a $3000 budget /yr to take a cab when the TTC is making us late for work, meetings, appointments, etc.. Many of us have had to take home work related documents that are equally as important and/or cumbersome on the TTC because we had no other option. At least he gets to ride for free and I'm sure the drivers will wait for him and not slam doors in his face and take off, like they do to the general public. |

Way to rebut my point with that one. You really got me there. |

Thank you!
He gets a free TTC pass. That should be his perk for being the head of the TTC. Just like corporately you get freebies and and discounts at your job. I have no problem with that aspect of things. |
