Rather, you believe they are out there because you were told so by people you trust.
Really, stop it already: claiming religious people are close-minded idiots is no better than preaching that atheists are blind sinners.

I believe places like Neptune are backed up by some substance like oh, scientific factual evidence that you can see through a telescope and people have actually bothered to stick billions of dollars worth of equipment up in space for a better look.
No one seems to have found the same kind of cash to prove heaven/hell/god/goddess or whatever seems to exist have they, much less come back with a hunk of it in their hand to say 'there you are'

But no
No they can send a bunch of underachieving halfwits to my door with a book that's basically been a subjective interpretation 'version whatever' since it was passed down from verbal fireside stories of a bunch of inbred, bronze age goat herders from out in the desert clinging onto pretty much the last desperate things left to them-
Hope, Belief and some dehydration induced hallucinations... sounds like pretty much any rave I've ever been too!

SIN as a concept is simply a nebulous set of ideals that society puts down in order to stop itself being torn to pieces by the human inclination to hurt others and themselves. It changes over time, just like 400 years ago, it was a sin to believe anything but my role in society was simply to cook and bear children, it changes over time.

If that's all the rationale you have to make the most of your time on earth than good luck to you and the tooth fairy you may as well worship. At least the little things I do believe in, trivial as it may seem don't give me to cause to ram it down people's throats from an early age until their socially conditioned...

Let's not forget the Easter Bunny Lil, he doesn't want to be left out of the loop. Especially not today.
Plus he brings me lots of chocolate which is both a blessing and a curse.

And they're not likely to do it - that's not how religion works. Just like you believe the best methodology is to just look up and do the best we can to spot a moon in a planet we're unlikely to visit in the near future, heaven and hell have a moral meaning to them: instead of focusing on a given fact (such as "Hell is in Michigan"), they focus on the moral consequences of there being a hell (i.e. "If I behave badly, I'll go to a place called hell; I can't verify whether or not it exists, but it's not relevant because I've been told that by the source I believe the most").

To compare religion and science is to misunderstand religion altogether: it's closer to politics than to anything else we can imagine.

I was at Easter mass this morning (groan) and the priest said "Faith cannot be proven because if there was proof, it would no longer be a faith but science. That's why faith is so important". I found that quite funny and slightly ironic.

But that's how it works. I've seen religious people equally puzzled by the way science works... they're completely different games.

Wow. How on Earth could you possibly know that these people are underachievers? How's the weather up there - on that high horse of yours?

I don't like politicians either, in fact they're up there with people who don't think I'm a good person for the fact that I don't believe in something they do. When that doesn't work, they quickly resort to scaremongering to get you to believe them... there's enough passive-aggressive types in the world without giving them some half arsed justification to continue what they do.

Oh I'd lose that fight, I have in the past and it cost me a broken cheekbone, nose and a fair bit of time in hospital.
Got anything else clever you can profoundly give the conversation or you still trying to figure out a way of salvaging something that makes you look less like a complete arsehole?
