Let's talk about incoming

Well, since I'm reading a couple of "existential crisis" cases around here, now it's my turn. :)

I've been studying and following all that stuff about producing for the last 8 years. Now I moved from Brazil to NZ and I'm buying gear again.

To be straight forward: Are you able to survive by doing what you like? (producing and maybe gigs?) I would like to read other experiences to get motivated. Seriously. If someone tells me at least he can pay the rent and get food only with producing music, I think i'll move on definitely. It's something that I struggle, I try to get rid of.. but I can't. I can't survive in the office the rest of my life. :eyespop: [of course I'm not gonna kick boss asses so early]

My big issue is the rent to pay, and the food to eat. I don't have family support here.

So, is anybody here that could share your experience? I mean, is not a matter of how much, it's a matter if can you afford your expenses being a producer. I can see many guys travelling, playing and producing good stuff, but I wonder if those guys are happy with what they doing and having financial return, or are they doing only because it's cool, even they are broken?

That's the point. That's the question I need to make to myself and people before spend money on gear again.

Of course that is the quality of tracks to consider, but let's take this part off for now. Consider people that can make average good charted tracks. Not talking about TOP50 producer on the world either. Normal, good producers, good to listen. Maybe yourselves :toocool:

Cheers

I think the trend now is that for producers who want to spend most of their time on making music, to move to Berlin for techno anyways. Cheap rent that supposedly doesn't suck, like minded people, etc.

You probably will not make a living from just putting out dance tunes and gigging. Some people can, but that is not even one in every thousand dance producers. So unless you have lots of skill (both with production and with marketing / making connections), lots of luck, or lots of free cash, you will have to keep another job.

Not trying to insult or anything, that is simply the reality.

Go ahead and move to Berlin if you really want, but make sure you save plenty for when the tech trend dries up and the party winds down.

doesnt matter where u live man as long as u have some sort of vision, and that vision should not include money :D

It can be done. Just have to come up with a business plan to expedite your goals and then the rest is simple. The system is not as broken as many say it is though you just have to think outside the box. There is TONS of money to be made still; the routes to get it are just much different than they were 5-10 years ago.

It also helps if you're young and marketable. The older an aspiring musician is the harder it is to make money in this climate.

Your English sucks. Fix that first and don't quit your day job.

If you get a residency at a club and a few good releases, you can work part time and produce part time.

Its really a matter of how you want to live and how much you want to tour. Touring's not that easy, and unless you live in england you're going to be looking at a lot of time on planes I think.
