Everyone is born greedy, lol. We're not exactly 'far removed' from what we like to think of as animals.
Nearly everything we do is done for ourselves. Even a whole bunch of things that we don't 'do for ourselves' (altruism? lol) are done for ourselves, it's just a more round-about way of doing it. "I helped other people, so it wasn't just for me".

Hey wise-guy, the self-control the monks achieve is a byproduct of working toward enlightenment.
There's a big difference between performing years of austerities and insightful meditation, and going out for a pint after a long day at the office while exclaiming loudly in your head, " DO I EVER HAVE UNDER CONTROL!". |
Which of these examples is supposed to refer to me? I don't recall ever claiming or thinking I had total self-control. I don't think there'll be a single second of my life where I will attain the highest state of being.
There's also a big difference between the kind of enlightenment those monks have and the kind which leads you to be a evangelical prick on an Internet forum. It always seems to me that the biggest evangelists are the ones who have found enlightenment/peace/God after a long spell of addiction or trouble, and they simply rechannel their energy into this new obsession. Your persistent attempts to convince everyone here that you're right about this do not imply that you're in any way enlightened. Like many evangelists you sound like you're desperately trying to convince yourself that you're fixed. |

nope. humans, like all animals, are born self-interested. |

Neither. I'm sure you're quite aware of your place in the grand scheme of things. You cited an example of self-control, I cited one of repression. Why you felt the need to personalise my example is your own mystery to solve.

Who said anything about finding peace and being fixed? I have my own wisdom, based on direct experience. I endeavour to share that wisdom with others. The person who posts a Youtube video of someone being brutally run over by a car is sharing their wisdom, but I rarely see anyone complaining about these kind of posts - in fact, a lot of people seem to revel in the violence. If there's room for that kind of wisdom on the Internets (and there seems to be a lot of room for that kind of wisdom), then there's certainly room for mine.
Don't like me? Fine? Think you're going to get me to change my stance and fall in line with everyone else, or somehow virtually drum me out of TAtown? Think again...your habitual replies to my posts only serve as fuel for me to continue pushing my nefarious agenda on this board, BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA!!!
(And of course everyone's born greedy. It's just that some parents attain a certain state of consciousness that compels them to teach their children that working to transmute that greediness into compassion is a good thing. Others teach their children to build massive deep sea oil rigs without putting sufficient precautionary measures in place that could minimise the possibility of large scale ecological disasters, should operations go awry) |

Because you used the second person "your" in your example, and the fact you dropped an obvious dig at me by saying "wise-guy". Mystery solved.

Someone posted videos of live mice being fed to a tank of piranhas a couple of days ago and multiple people posted their discomfort with at and the dubious morality of the act. So you're clearly not looking very hard.

I'm not trying to change your stance, I'm trying to stop you constantly bringing your stance into every discussion. It's as tiring as hearing a die-hard Christian turn every discussion onto God. And you replied to my post in this thread, which is why I'm "habitually" replying in return. |
