Then why, after countless educational campaigns explaining to people why it's important to take steps to reduce their footprint on the planet, are we still mired in the same arguments, discussions and boondoggling that seem to be leading us down the road to nowhere?

Why? Because personal change, if it takes place at all, is usually very slow to happen. As humans, we'll come up with any excuse, even to the point of outright denying what's squarely in front of our faces, in order to not have to adjust our habits of convenience.

There was a very simple incident that took place during the time I spent living in Manila that I'll never forget. I was prepping dinner and a close friend who was a local gave me a shame-inducing berating due to the fact that I was about to throw out the top of a bell pepper without cutting off the remaining veggie-meat that surrounded it. Her harsh words taught me a wonderful lesson about wastefulness, and I've carried that lesson with me ever since. Granted, I could have got my back up, said "what's the difference?", or "I'll do it next time", but fortunately I was open enough to hear through her anger to the message she was trying to convey to me.

P.S.: My wife and I decided that we won't be having kids. Sure that will come as some relief to those who have concerns that my offspring might be annoying the out of yours on TOTA in 2025.

Nice, so you learned your lesson and absolutely no government intervention or enforcement was needed. I learned a few lessons from my stay in manila as well. Namely that you havnt quite seen pollution until youve been to manila which is interesting since the phillipines was not on a list of countries forced to cut emissions under kyoto. Also, be polite because everyone is armed LOL!

The end of the middle class might be coming. But it will be mostly due to the government's whittling away of societys wealth. The tax burden on canadians is unprecedented and the US is about to get a huge lesson in socialism. Governments dont create wealth, if anything its the opposite. They are not even good at spreading wealth around (as obama so aptly put it).

The attack on the middle class comes with every new tax increase, every new fee, every new piece of bureaucratic red tape and every new restriction on personal liberty.

I made a choice, a long time ago, that I would live my life the way I see fit, regardless of what others think. If I want to eat a 64 oz steak then I will...if I don't finish it...oh well. If I want to drive my car to the store to buy cigarettes I will. If I feel like recycling something I will. I don't care about trying to save the earth from doom....eventually I will be dead and what happens after that...I don't really care...I'll be dead. If we are too late to save the earth and the earth is going to blow up in 20 years...so be it...I'll be dead but I know that I enjoyed my life and didn't worry about all this crap.

LOL

seriously though...if all these people are so hell bent on turning us into cuba with government control, home grown chickens and bike riding, they should just move to cuba!

I dont think fidel/raul would approve of the smoking restrictions and drinking restrictions they whine for though. LOL

(and they call cuba communist.........)

A perfect example. I just finished my orange juice and I threw the plastic bottle into the garbage. Now I could have kept the bottle and the next time I went out for a smoke I could have thrown it into the recycling. I didn't want it on my desk that long so I threw it in the garbage. Now if I had a recycling bin at my desk I would have thrown it in there....oh well...life goes on.
