but now im learning about equing..levels..mixing...low cuttting etc..also picked up a guide book on music theory..
im still pretty clueless about alot of it..i admit but just a few months ago i didnt know what any of these terms ment..so i think im making some improvement

I go through phases where I read and read and read a lot but won't touch production at all for months. Than, all of the sudden I get in the mood and start working on some weird but never finish a full track. I just make loops! lol Yeah, I'm weird like that.
It took me a while to get past the scared phase. lol And one day, BAM! Everything just started clicking. Than the next day, BAM! I was able to take other peoples songs apart in my head.
I still have lots to learn and have to actually finish a track! lol |

| I'm still focusing on the overall quality of everything. I've recently begun experimenting with styles outside of my own and am pushing my musical technique a lot. I've been focusing on developing more dexterity and focus, playing the keyboard. I'm also really trying to be focused on the sound quality and working on mixing to unity with no mastering other than a limiter - which I really try not to use, albeit unsuccessfully. |

At a stage where my creativity is the bottleneck opposed to the technical production aspects (though those can be improved as well of course). For the first time in about a year or so I've spent some serious time on music production. Just this particular night. It's 5am, I have to get up about 8-ish. I'm not done yet, gonna enjoy this as long as it lasts. I've missed this.
Edit: Couldn't help myself. So happy I've actually done something proper just now: http://soundcloud.com/storyteller/c...6th-of-may-2010 Feedback is much appreciated :-) |

I forced myself to do this. really helps with your mixing skills.
As for where I am at. I've improved alot over the past year. I can finish tracks and get them to a reasonable sounding mix. I'm now learning to change my work flow as I tend to take too long on making certain decisions, which then end up being doodle sessions and then before you know it hours have gone by and not much progress has happened.
I've still got a way to go, but learning never ends in any kind of work.
I'm also in the process of changing the program I use for production so things have slowed up while I learn new things. |

Totally right there with you. I don't have any problem making things sound good, I'm just struggling with writing at the moment. I'll have these short bursts of inspiration, but I'll go days without getting anything meaningful done in the studio. The good news is I am still managing to get my work done and get tracks out the door.
I have a big problem with distractions as well. Now that baseball has started, that sucks 3-3.5 hours out of the evening on most days for me. Then I have maybe 2 hours to try and get work done and sometimes the inspiration is gone by that point. I really need to start turning off the TV more often. :) |

I also went through a stage of getting very much bogged down with the technical side of things when I started to understand it more and my creativity went.
Changing your mind set and work flow helps there, and also not to force it. If it aint happening it aint happening lol.
Agree with Eric on distractions, you have to really strict with yourself otherwise you get nothing done. Also working when tired, not good for me, but I'm going off subject here lol. |

im finally starting to focus on the real small bits which i was overlooking before. better compression. better eq.
i was doing all these but i did some self teaching and MAN how much this can make a difference.
this all started when i was hearing my songs and they didnt sound all together like compressed i guess? compared with profesh songs.
so its making me focus on the small things and the change has been very good!:D |

It took me 10 years to get to a point that could be called decent ;). Partially due to my age back then and of course knowledge and music software developments. If you love making music just don't ever give up! Try to surround yourself with people that know a lot and inspire/challenge you. You'll learn tons in just so little time.
And thanks for the comment Tomas :-)! |
