What both Fruity Loops and, on the other side of the coin, Dr. Roxo seem to be suffering from is quite common to marketers/psychologists. It's the reason why product launches have been researched in front of focus groups for months after the product has passed the prototype phase.
A while back, Pepsi would do televised 'blind' taste-tests asking customers to rate their product (cup A) against Coca-Cola (cup B). Invariably, people chose Pepsi. Invariably, many of these same people would return to the super-market and wind up buying Coca-Cola. Someone noticed this and asked if people could actually tell the difference between the two. Long story, short: No. There are professional tasters who can, but you, me, and the rest of the normal world can't do it to save their lives.
Someone took this information and started relating it to packaging. They did a test where they would take a product, like condensed milk, and put the same product in three different cans. One can was marked up with the standard folksy retail packaging - very basic, but not TOO basic, another can was marked simply with the words, condensed milk, and another can was marked up with all kinds of crazy graphics meant to appeal to a 'younger' generation.
They then had the participants make cookies with the condensed milk. They taste tested them. If you guessed that Can A won, you'd be correct. Same condensed milk. Same recipes. The one with the old-fashioned, folksy graphics won.
Fruity Loops, quite unfortunately, is one letter away from being a sugary child's cereal. I believe that and the feminine associations made with the word, Fruity, in the first place are killing the FL brand in the minds of many consumers. |

You're right. They do. But most people are still not able to make the distinction between them, based on a blind testing. |

what do you like better? pepsi all the way for me. out of a can. coke from a glass bottle trumps all though.. or am i the only crack smoker who thinks they can taste a difference depending on the container-type? |

I'm a Coke man but I also love Pepsi. When they came out with the Pepsi Natural - the one where they made it like they did in the '70's, before they started using corn syrup, we were all over that and the Mt. Dew, too.
Coke in the glass bottle is the shiznat, I have to agree. |
