Ahh what can I say, I should have arrived before 12 but ended up getting there around 12:30 only to be waiting in line for over an hour. Apart from the lineup problems, the flaming hot environment, pushy people, lack of dance space, and endless breaks from Paul... I must say I still managed to have a pretty banging time. Maybe it was just me but I was dancing up a storm and really enjoying what I heard but I simply couldn't stay on the dancefloor for long periods of time. The ceiling drips were incredibly bad and was highly reminiscent of Koolhaus when it gets rammed... one more reason I will never step foot in that complex. Paul finished at about 3:45 and whatever I did manage to hear from him was pretty stellar... once again despite the constant breaks... they did however give me a chance to go for a few smoke breaks and not miss anything but it was weird to hear some pumping tunes and then just dead silence right after... I'm not sure if this is how he normally plays when he does a live P.A. but it was frustrating at times. Regardless, I drove over an hour, waited in line another hour and I wasn't about to let that ruin my night. I was absolutely exhausted and by about 4:30 I called it quits. Hats off to the closers as they kept the vibe going nicely with some proggy chuggy tunes.
All in all there was only one tune I wanted to hear all night and it made mine complete:

| probably one of the worst sets I've heard in fw in quite awhile. his encores/breaks were really annoying by the 3rd time... enough already! the crowd was pretty bad as well, very pushy.. but I still had a good time :p |

I had fun...
Ive never seen him before and I liked the kinda stuff he was playing! But I have to agree the whole stopping the music thing was kinda annoying. The first time he did it I was near the back of the club so i couldnt see what was going on and just heard the music stop and totally thought the decks were broken or something lol |

My 3rd attempt to see him so I was determined to actually *see* him. Horribly pushy crowd up front & left. There's a huge difference in crowds between the Fri and Sat nights, I'd really hesitate on going back for a Friday night event now.
Simina was decent but I thought she played too hard for an opening set - downright big bass-heavy, tribally influenced tunes to end off on. But perhaps that was just because I was hoping Kalkbrenner would start off melodic. Anyways, he took over and kept up the momentum. The good - it was a downright entertaining and fun PA, he did play some amazing tunes and the crowd loved it. The bad - no flow whatsoever in his set, quite a few repeats, total dj grandstanding. Wish I could have stayed to see James Teej after, the 2 tracks I caught from him were quite good.
Would I go see Kalkbrenner again? Probably. But hopefully it'd be a dj set where he's more concerned with putting out a great set. Cause all the dj showmanship gets annoying after a while.
p.s. holy hot in there! Quite possibly as hot as the Speedy J night. |
