CHICAGO -- Former Chicago Blackhawks goaltender Antti Niemi has decided to accept a one-year, $2 million deal with the San Jose Sharks, according to a league source.

After helping lead the Blackhawks to their first Stanley Cup title in 49 years, Niemi and Chicago went to salary arbitration. The Blackhawks submitted an offer of $1.5 million, but the arbitrator awarded Niemi $2.75 million.

Montreal should have made a move on him. This will be a nice replacement for Nabby.

good pickup for a great price.

the habs did not even have him on their radar...it was just rumours.

San Jose just needs one cup for now. They have been loading the team up with two year potential guys just trying to get to the big show. Will Niemi be the missing piece? Doesnt seem like the sharks made many big moves this off season. This news is about the biggest. Damn I wish I lived back home and could go to the practices and see how they are looking.

niemi played good, but was not the reason chicago won last year...i mean look at the crazy team they had.

thornton needs to stop being a choke artist in the playoffs imo.

True that Thronton disappears in playoffs.Thats really sad. Nabby was hit and miss. Actually he wasnt too bad in net last playoffs, I was more worried that they were giving Nittimaki first net. That had me worried. At least Niemi is pretty sound in net. I hope they dont give captains C to Marleau or Thornton. That "C" is bad luck. Every shark that wears it plays awful. Give it to a no-show like Huskins, he can only get better. This season needs to start the up. Im getting my first hockey fix on the 22nd of this month when the Sharks play the Ducks. Until then its NHL11 on xbox.

Oh I just heard that Price is finally on paper with Montreal. Not sure for how much but Im sure its close to $5mil.

yeah the goalie on the other team (4th stringer) was the reason they won.

This coming from a Blackhawks fan, as long as your defense is good, Niemi is good. If you get Niemi on a two on one breakaway, he'll lose. Watch out for the one timer. This burned him too. Example the Philly series. Also his stick side high needs work. Shoot here, the puck will most likely find the net.

Who's replacing Blake? What made Niemi great was the defense. Hope this works for Doug Wilson. If not he will be looking for new work.

5.5 mill for 2 years...too much money, but the Gauthier ed himself by trading away Halak that early. You make an unsigned goalie number one, you will have to pay more.

it leaves us with about 2 million to spend under the cap...i'm hoping that we can get a big stay at home d man for our bottom pairing, or maybe offer bill guerin a 1 year deal...40 or not he is still good on the pp and can be the type of leader that we need for some of the younger guys.
Ian
I have to say that a big defenseman is the only thing I'd take for the caps right now. They have to learn to not make the same mistakes in the playoffs and handle the pressure and a young squad like we have should improve, and we should see the fruits of good drafting in the last 3-4 years.

washington does not really need to do much...they lost to a very hot goalie last year (which tends to happen in the playoffs), and ovy disappeared.

there is no way that they can't be considered heavy favourites to finish number one in the east again. Ovy is more skilled than Crosby is, but he will never be considered the best until he gets rid of his reputation for not being a big game player.

see: olympics as well.

not to mention that semin played like he was doing disney on ice.

north american talent still is the way to go, and this proves it imo.

Ian
I agree on Ovi. I think a lot of it is down to how teams played him though, he's got to develop a strategy for bringing the best out of himself due to that. Semin is getting more & more hit & miss, not sure what we can do about that. Goaltending wise, I like the Varlamov/Neuvirth combination, both are young and hungry and should push each other well. I do just worry about a big defender though, someone like gonchar, phaneuf, niedermayer, just someone imposing by name/reputation. Green is good but more feared for his scoring ability.

all i know is that last year i was satisfied thinking about how you got pwned by my team.

serves you right for liking the leafs (aka the leaves come march)
