Twilight is one of the few hugely popular teen-oriented fantasy narratives that doesn't fit the model, and it happens to be mainly consumed by girls. So what's the secret?

Does there have to be a secret? Why can't it be as simple as, "It's a 'romance' novel dumbed down for teenage females"?

i heard the books are better than the movie :o

Because there are thousands of dumbed down teenage romances published every year. Twilight isn't just a popular book. It has an explosive popularity that suggests something more is happening. It is a cultural phenomenon.

Now you're just starting to sound like Kismet and iTranscendence. :p

But seriously, I do get what you're trying to say. Care to offer your thoughts as to why?

This, too. Take something that has garnered somewhat of a following with a passionate fan base, market the out of it and *bam*.

every generation has its "ty teen blockbuster pic that ends up on the fast food drink cups".

hardly a cultural phenomena.

Sure, but those generally don't start out as a book series that was immensely popular long before being made into movies.

At least, I can't think of the last mega teen blockbuster that did.

Well as I said, I haven't actually read or seen any of it. I'm trying to discuss something that's too ty to actually sit through, so I'd appreciate the thoughts of people who have.

This is a nothing-answer. What marketing? Describe the nature of this marketing to me. Saying "marketing" suggests one of two answers:
1) Something about this book was very marketable, which brings us right back to the original question.
2) The way this book was marketed was exceptionally successful and highly original. In which case, I'd be interested in an explanation of that marketing, and why other books aren't going nuclear in the same way.
