This review is SO LATE lol.
As Jill already mentioned, it was ALL ABOUT THE SUNDAY SCHOOL TENT. I barely left there. The only time I left, was once to see The Chemical Brothers on night #1 (and yes, if you missed them, you missed out - they are just ing incredible, and never come here!!!). And I left once on day 2 to see Above and Beyond to get my trance fix, and def. got it, they were excellent. Hearing 'On A Good Day', and 'The Longest Road' made my day :)
I got there late each day, so I did miss quite a few sets. But the ones I did see all met my highest expectations.
First set of the festival for me was Claude VonStroke, who I've been dying to see live for years! He's one of my fav. techno producers. His get down and dirty booty techno can't be beat. So fun. Finally hearing 'Who's Afraid of Detroit" played live by him was a dream come true, since it's an all time fav. track of mine. It NEVER gets old. Singing along to "Beat That Bird" was def. a highlight. lol And hearing 'Aundy' was great too, especially when he ended it with some crazy breaks beatdown. Vid to follow. Incredible.
I can't write a reivew for everyone I saw, that would just take too long.
The Chemical Brothers of course blew my f'n mind. It really was a dream come true to finally see them. The thought that goes into their visuals is always beyond impressive (I own a DVD with live footage, so I knew what to expect). And since they were on the main stage, it was EXTRA LOUD, woo. Bass to the max. My fav. track off their new album is by far 'Swoon'. I think it was either their first or second track, and wow, made my life complete hearing that, along with Block Rockin' Beats, Setting Sun, & Hey Boy Hey Girl. I wish they were on longer though, it was pretty short, def. felt like less than an hour. And everything cut out at one point (all power), so that kinda sucked. But, they got everything back up and running pretty quick, THANK GOD. It was towards the end anyway, so it wasn't too bad. They didn't disappoint, AT ALL. I just wish they had played longer. I didn't get to hear Elektrobank, which is too bad, that track is an all-time fav. I guess it never was a huge single for them. le sigh. Best music video of all time imo.
The other set that stood out to me was Steve Bug, another first for me. My friend Alex told me he had the best set at DEMF, so I was really looking forward to him. He was phenomenal. So was Squillace, Buttrich, and Tanzmann. They were having so much fun dj'ing back to back with each other. Fun to watch.
The good thing about being in the Sunday School tent most of the time, was that the crowd was MUCH better in there. Def. an older crowd. I think the average age at this festival was 16-19. Really young. New age wannabe raver kids wearing all neon, all of them. They were nice enough though, I just felt old. I talked to a few of them when I had to ditch my techno friends to go solo in the trance tent. I also checked out some dubstep as well. The noobs def. like their dubstep!
As already mentioned, the dust was horrible. I've never felt so unhealthy in my entire life. Black tar was coming out of our noses for days afterwards. Disgusting. The music at the festival was top notch, but I wouldn't go back, UNLESS I bring a face mask next time. A MUST if any of you go next year.
Here's some vids. A little distorted, but they def. get the point across.
The DUBSTEP tent. So entertaining to ppl watch.

Sunday School was a cerebral impregnation of unbelievably incredible music. I've never felt so brain-banged in my life.

Are you sure you got there for the beginning of their set? 'Cause Swoon definitely was not during the beginning of it and they played for an hour and a half. It also took them a little over 5 minutes to get their set up back up, a lot of people left thinking that it was just the end of their set. Definitely the longest recovery from any crash I've ever seen live, though I can't blame them, they really lost everything.

So glad we went back to Sunday School when we did.

You're probably right. There's def. a chance that we moved over there from the sunday school tent later than I thought. I must have missed the beg. then :( I was laughing at how many ppl walked away thinking it was the end when the power cut out. The track that was playing cut out in the middle of it (whatever it was). The Chemical Brothers would never end a show like that. Ppl are slow sometimes. I had to convince a group of guys behind me to stay, that it was clearly a power issue, and not the end.

Yea it was ridiculous for people to assume that it was over. One of the two guys looked SO frustrated when it crashed. He checked around the equipment and then threw up both his arms in frustration before walking off.
I was really pleased when they recovered with "Leave Home" and it's "the brothers gonna work it out" sample.

Ya, I was just happy they were able to finish! lol I saw how frustrated they were too.
So, were you there from the beg. then? Do you know what track they opened with?

Your video shows he's got an awesome vibe. He's definitely feeling the music and knows when to tweak a knob for maximum effect. I would have liked to see him get into the mix a little faster at the end though. His Fabric CD slays too.

Not sure if you partied when you were younger, but if you did, do you remember seeing the older contingent at a party looking not quite out of place, but just...older. Now that I'm there I just look around and notice how everyone is - you guessed it - younger.
Last year I chatted up some almost jailbait at a party where Twonz, Alan Oldham, and Kenny Glasgow were spinning at the Basement and she said she was into dubstep - followed by 'I really like this kind of stuff too'. Promoters need to reach out to more girls like this and expose them to underground house and techno.
