I guess the crowd just seemed older in there, in comparison to the other tents. I'm glad you and friends enjoy techno! :D

Not going to lie, my tastes have actually been leaning away from techno and into dubstep, haha, but it's a recent phenomena. I think a lot of people would be surprised at what dubstep has to offer and how closely it resembles techno at times. None of that Rusko garbage (he describes his sound as a tongue in cheek parody of dubstep) but the real original stuff. Tracks coming out on labels like Hotflush, Planet Mu or Hyperdub are all absolutely excellent. I don't think it's that big on this side of the pond though.

EZ actually had some pretty good forward thinking dubstep in that Redbull tent but most of it was earlier on in the day. Namely Martyn and Jon Hopkins. It's a shame that it gets such a bad rep with the older crowd.

I actually like Dubstep, which is why I made a point to check out the Redbull tent. I really enjoyed what I heard in there, but I couldn't tell you who I saw. I like it, but I don't follow the genre/dj's like I do techno, trance etc. The only thing that I found irritating, was that whoever was on, was MC'ing as well. And he just kept yelling the same over and over again. "YO, what's up Electric Zoo!" lol. I agree, there's a lot of techno influences in it, as well as reggae, and hip hop. I'm actually going to check out the labels you mentioned, thanks for sharing :)

Pleasure Sunday School-ing with you, my friend.

I'm writing my review sometime soon, lol.

Indeed dude. Sunday school was a serious dose of ZoneJunkie Tomfoolery. Was an absolute epic please!

That would have been Diplo. He's one half of Major Lazer. Unless someone else did that "What's up Electric Zoo" continously as well but his set was the only one I caught like that. Would have been at 7:15pm on the Sunday night during the end bit of Carola's set.

Dubstep DJs I like worth following would be Scuba, Jon Hopkins (though he's pretty experimental, pigeon-holing him as dubstep is pretty unfair. His first album is pretty much entirely ambient and it's a sound that still dominates his style), Instra:mental, Sigha, Icicle, Mary Anne Hobbs, Mount Kimbie, Kode9, Burial, Joker, Ikonika, Martyn, Zomby, Ramadanman, Joy Orbison, Shackleton, Appleblim, Vex'd... certainly others but that's more than enough for a strong base.

Most of the stuff I get are torrented albums. If that's your thing I strongly suggest tracking down Scuba's "Sub:stance" mix album. Otherwise this mix by Icicle for the Sonic Router blog is pretty good. If you want a quick run down on the genre and it's history this is an absolutely excellent chronology mix spanning the evolution of dubstep. In fact I'd recommend that last one most as a quick and proper introduction.

I wish we took the vid during dubstep @ the redbull tent - the vibe was off the hook, makes Sunday School look like church mass lol

The music was not my cup of tea but my God! people were soooooooo into it, every time the bass dropped, the hands were synchronized, amazing! Prob the most amazing vibe I've seen during the 2 days!

Yea, it's like that everywhere for dubstep now. Though that sound is really different than the stuff I posted. It's much more aggressive, loud and is gaining much more mainstream recognition (Rusko is producing a track for Britney Spears for gods sake). The stuff I was listing off is a bit more... refined? Scuba runs a monthly night at Berghain, his sound fits in very well with that house/techno crowd.

It was def. fun in there. Ppl were very synchronized with their hand motions. lol And jumping up and down like crazy. I agree, it probably did have the best overall vibe of all the tents. I took a couple vids in there. The last one that I posted on here was in there, with the Dubstep dude that was hilarious to watch. I'll see if I can track down the other one. It was really distorted, but probably had a better view of the crowd going off.
