see my edit of my previous post...

my question. just what kind of EDM crowd? trance crowd? commercial house crowd? techno crowd? god knows we, the EDM crowd, are so fussy about our music...
randallpink
it's a good point, but just look at their line up and you can see what crowd its geared toward. if your into trance, you won't go see manzone and strong or deko - ze, but there's definitely people who will. i'm not saying that KW has any previous references of great EDM clubs but it doesn't mean it isn't possible. i've seen way crazier things happen. hell, the Maple Leafs are first in the NHL right NOW!!!!

I don't think any of us want to see it fail but it is a tough uphill battle for it to work. Many of the people on a site like this are not going to be happy with a club that plays commercial house every night...you might as well just call it top 40 IMO.

I don't think it really matters how much promotion you throw at it....it will not bring in people from areas outside KW. You might have a small portion of people who will stay in KW now instead of going to Toronto but it won't be enough to keep a club going.

Reality is you won't be able to even tell if the club can succeed until it makes it through its first year.

all true, but i think with the lineup they have for saturdays (which doesn't look too commercial to me ), plus the money they'll bring in on whatever they do for their friday nights will be enough. i know its gonna be hard but i'm being optimistic :) --> a good club never came without a little hard work to get it going!

PLUS, i already know a few people who are willing to come from Toronto to Waterloo on a THURSDAY to see Steve Angello cause its his only Ontario stop. so that isn't always necessarily true that people won't come from outside KW

Im guessing you're a relative newbie in the area... I havent had that optimism since the first year I lived in the tri cities area 7 long years ago. =)

The club game is fickle. Especially in the tri cities area.

Granted the market has changed alot. Back in 2003, house music was at its lowest point in popularity since it came about in the mid 80's Now its on the upswing, and has been for the last couple years.

I wish beta all the best, and ill definitely be out to a few of the events.

I lost that optimism after about my 23rd birthday. I've seen a lot of clubs come and go in the area since I was 19....17 years ago....and the only club that seems to survive is Revolution. They are obviously doing something right.

Beta can make this work, but they've gotta bring NAMES. People that other people will want to see and will travel in from the outer regions of this area like Milton, Guelph, London, Cambridge, etc. If they get a really good name, they may be even able to pull in people from Toronto.

Abstract ran a successful Thursday night for 2 years. The nature of the club business is that most 'successful' clubs only have a 2 year long shelf life anyway. I have never seen so many venues in Waterloo open at once and most of them seemingly doing well - and those venues are all catering to the hip hop and mainstream dance crowd.

So far the marketing and everything behind this seems to be about right. They're doing this in a very Toronto way, so if anything I applaud them for trying.

I saw an Angello flyer today in K/W! WOW, it's like I'm in Toronto.
Beta
Nice flyer eh... LOL...

Just started the promo team on Saturday, they will be out every Fri/Sat and weekdays to poster the city.

It's looking like a new city. Promo team said over half the people they talked to already knew or heard of BETA, so I guess we are gonna get going with a running start!!!!
