Doctor Assisted Suicide (pg. 2)

So, at what age would this be ok? Are you saying a 15 yr old child should be able to take advantage of this, because they think their life sucks? Or just ppl that are terminally ill and in pain, and are already on the path to death anyway?

What about the families that have to deal with the turmoil of losing the person, esp. their parents that brought them into this world, and helped to raise them?

I agree with "it's my body, and my life", but it's not only you that would be affected by that choice. Is it not selfish on your part to take the easy way out, and inflict pain on those who love you, even if it is doctor assisted? There is always other alternatives to changing your life for the better, other than just giving up and choosing death. And I'm not religious, so my opinion on this has nothing to do with that. I'm just putting myself in my parents shoes... I think the only time this would be ok, is if the person was already dying.

I absolutely agree with you that it's a bit of a selfish act as you would be inflicting pain on your loved ones. But sometimes I think it's okay to be selfish. I don't agree that there are ALWAYS other alternatives. Sometimes people are in pain on a daily basis and are just waiting to die. And while it may hurt your loved ones to see you go, it also hurts them to see you in so much pain. Pain that they themselves can't experience. How many times do people say "well I'm just glad they're not suffering anymore" when their loved ones pass on?

Edit: I did just notice that you also say that you think that the only time this would be okay would be if the person is already dying though.

I think once you reach the age of majority.

Isn't it selfish of others to want to keep you around when you don't want to live? Sure it may be hard on them but I don't think you should continue living a life you don't want to live just because it will bother others that you killed yourself.

^ this

it's definitely has to be an option for incredibly ill people - in pain or paralyzed

I agree. But I think they're saying anyone should be able to, if they want to die.

I'm not against anyone being able to have assisted suicide however, I highly doubt you would find any doctor that would agree to assist someone in killing themselves just because they hate life.

You def. wouldn't be able to find one. It's kind of creepy to think about though. A lot of ppl aren't happy out there. I wonder how many ppl would take advantage of this, if given the choice, and it was legal. There's a lot of ppl out there that I'm sure have considered committing suicide, but don't have the guts to do it on their own. If it was ever accepted by society, and performed by doctors, I wonder how many ppl out there would choose to end their life that way. It's def. a way more easy out then doing it yourself, and a lot less scary.

Thank you. Was just going to comment this.

How is it fair to you, and not selfish of others, to expect you to live out your life in pain when all you want is to be released from it (death).

Thats essentially making you a slave to them and their wishes for you. How the hell is that fair to you!?

hehe, all the emo kids would be gone :p

I think it would make sense to make the clause "due to medical condition of the person" or something like that

but now I'm thinking - how about these tiny babies born severely brain-damaged or physically damaged, and who potentially will live a very limited life - will their parents have the right to end their lives?

I totally understand that point of view. I do. But again, in this situation, it should never be ALL about you? Because it isn't! I just know that my parents, even if it was doctor assisted suicide, would still think they failed me in some way. They would live their lives with all this guilt about it. They honestly, would never be the same again. So, it's ok to 'save' yourself, but leave your otherwise happy parents, to now live the rest of their lives in misery? Do none of you love your parents enough, to spare them that? I don't get that. Honestly, if your family signed off on it with you, then hey, go for it. Or if they have already passed away, also, go for it. I just would NEVER do that to them, not as long as they're on this earth. They would never understand.

I think the parents should have the right to make that decision for their child.

If you take all emotional attachment out of the equation its probably a very easy decision to make.

I think only for terminally ill patients that are basically waiting to die.

There is something to be said for the quality of life vs quantity of life. And, if I can choose between either spending 1 last month with my family, enjoying it - then passing away gracefully and not in pain, or - dragging out my life as long as possible, the only way I'm getting by is because my body is pumped full of tubes feeding me / taking away my waste and I'm barely conscious, and when I am conscious - I'm in extreme pain knowing that I'm simply waiting to die : give me assisted suicide.
