War in Afghanistan and Iraq

There are quite a few people on these boards who are part of the U.S. and Canadian defense, and there are a lot of politically informed and/or extreme individuals as well. Please explain why we are in Afghanistan and Iraq. Why did we go to begin with, and why have we stayed for so long? What are the goals of our being there, and when will we end it?
I am not claiming complete ignorance on the topic, I just want to know what other people think/believe. Our governments haven't been entirely transparent regarding the wars, so I suspect that there is little consensus on the reality of the situation.

Ok wait... let me clarify. We attacked 2 entire countries because 19 crazy extremists attacked the U.S.?
Then the U.S. went to these countries to fight off their terrorists to protect the U.S. from future attacks and to help the country itself.
Now, on purely altruistic terms, the U.S. is spending trillions of dollars to help these countries?
Is that what you're suggesting?

I suppose I shouldn't only say the "U.S." when obviously they aren't the only ones involved. |

Reasons for being there .
- Stop terrorists and take out Saddam as he had WMD's
Reasons for staying so long
- Because everyone knows it's only a matter of time before Afghanistan goes back into its backwards ways
- Iraq is better than it was a few years ago, and I guess it could be said we were somewhat successful.
Goals of our being there
- Westernize them and secure the countries for future use, may include helping out the oil and defence groups.
When will it end
- Depends how quickly we can Westernize them and stop them from stoning whores to death.
