Absolutely nothing. The Taliban will not give up the fight over there that is for sure and their so called democractic leaders are even more messed up and corrupted than the Taliban.

Maybe I am misunderstanding what people are saying, but it seems like some people believe we are there for altruistic reasons. I would hope that all of us here are smart enough to know that no country would spend trillions of dollars to invade another country, and stay there, for altruistic reasons. So there must be some benefit to being there (both Iraq and Afghanistan). What is it?

Iraq... Honestly, who the really knows, oil, contracts, weapons of mass-d, regiem change, democracy, pink ponies shooting rainbows out their ass, neo-conservative manifest destiny incarnate?

Afghanistan, most fundamental islamic government pre-9/11, allowed safe harbor for international terrorist operations. 9/11 was the harbinger for a actual push against the growing threat of islamic fundamentalist operations against the west.

Why are we still in Afghanistan? Because we went in the first place. That country of valleys and mountains has been the battle ground of the greatest powers this planet has ever seen, from the mongol hordes, through the british empire, to the soviet union, and now the NATO ISAF members... its been a challenge to take and control. Leaving it under the guise of failure only spells doom and gloom, staying there only spells more death and destruction.

The initial reasns for going in were just and altruestic, the staying is for face.

afghanistan was little more than an exercise in payback. sometimes when you punch a bully in the nose they cry and run home to mum. other times they turn up at your house and rape your family. and any pets you might have. and in your mouth.

the US went with the latter this time round.

Belgian defence here!

I don't really get where you are going to theresa? are you trying to convince others that the forces in afghanistan are no longer needed actually never were? Well in my opinion it was a bomb waiting to explode, if they haven't invaded it... what would have happened then? And i'm not saying there aren't any other reason behind it all! there probably are! but acually, i don't care. I can't do anything about all other reasons! the only thing I see and care about is: of the whole worlds population, I wanted to help out and do something for other people, so I could say: "atleast I did my part and tried to make the world a better place" Mankind just isn't made for peace and never will, even if the ISAF-forces leave there will be another terrain where they will fight.
And about Iraq, I can only say that i'm very glad Belgium didn't help out! Because the were invaded for the wrong reasons! no signs of wmd's!

Anyways I'm allso very glad that i'm an Engineer

Additionally, the powers that be at the upper echelons of US Gov didn't anticipate what would happen as a result of the former Iraq government being overthrown.

You sure about that?

Sorry, but as one Republican TA has reminded me throughout the years, "You don't know Dick"

Sorry, but I can't help LMAO when people genuinely believe that we are there for any other reason than personal gains. Altruistic!? HA!

It amazes me that blind patriotism is able to manipulate your abilities to be logical. Let's be honest here... do you think ANY country would stay in another country, risking lives, spending ridiculous amounts of money etc. etc. if they didn't believe they would get something out of it?

How about that Caspian Sea?

What the hell do I know....

But I have a sneaky suspicion that it has something to do with the Trans-Afghan Pipeline.
