I know its not the main focus but it went into who was doing well internationally and listed a couple dj's who were doing well. Just thought Arnej deserved some sort of mention if you going to talk about electronic music as a whole in Toronto, no? |
probably...but Arnej really isn't eye weekly's thing...just look at the artists they do mention. |

Would I be wrong to assume the person who wrote this goes to footy on the regular? Probably doesn't care for trance or know who Arnej is? Arnej rank 87 on dj mag top 100. Not trying to be a smart ass but did any of the other dj's make it in? |

| Both Carlo Lio and Arnej should be on there. It is a possibility her taste had a big influence in writing this piece. Really surprised no Trance was mentioned, even though she was talking about the 'rave' culture in Toronto |

Bottle service is a reflection of the clubs that push it, not giving two s about the music.
Remember cobra BEFORE the benches in the dancefloor?
The sheer volume of booze they sell on wed, fri and sat, led them to ignore that fact that the thursday was based on music first....so they added more tables.
Its the perfect example (in my mind) of what bottle service is. A way to make money off of people that are going to the club REGARDLESS of whats being played.
If the clubs priority is NOT bottle service, its a tell-tale sign that you are in a place that cares about the music before the ""look at me im cool, i bought a bottle of booze at 500% profit" approach.
Hence the remarks about footwork, and why its the "benchmark" its plainly obvious, the music is the focus.
Think i'm kidding?
Go somewhere where bottle service is the focus and tell me how the music is. |

Guvernment Saturday, This is London Friday debunks your point.
Hating on bottle service is like a bottle service crowd hating on people that go to afterhours, what's the point?
Different strokes for different folks. Bottle service isn't my thing and I don't like the music, but I don't think I'm better than that crowd because I like house/techno music.
As for Footwork, they've had the biggest bookings all year, when you get artists like Richie Hawtin, Loco Dice, DJ Vibe or Victor Calderone and you have the best locals as well as debuting a lot of international artists in Toronto, you're on to something... |

take a survey of 100 people that have been in the game 5 years or more and ask them if guvernment/til was the place it was before the incarnation of bottle service.
its not.
want proof, go there at 3am on any night OTHER than a long weekend party....and you'll see 20 "heads" or less. |

| and i dont think im "better" than that crowd, i just choose not to partake in the nonesense that goes along with it....too each they're own absolutely. |

Oh man I was just about to write that same thing. It's always insane at TIL, you can have a world class DJ, club is packed, then at 2:30-3:00 every time boom half the club empties out cause theres no booze around. With guv it's fairly irrelevant cause their capacity is so high you don't really notice if 5% of the people get bottle service and most of it is off to the sides and back where people on the dance floor could care less about it. Plus they do a great job at keeping those people in the drink, where people there for the music rarely venture.
It's been highlighted above but basically the majority of bottle service people aren't there for the music. They don't make my life by any means and I'll continue to have a good time with them around. But the bottom line is whether it's dating, talking, hanging out or in this case clubbing, you'd always rather do it with similar minded people with the similar interests. Bottle service and the crowd it brings detract from that environment. FW understands this and is booming because of it. Hopefully other DJ luring clubs can realise this sooner than later.
The only real benefit in all this is that potentially with clubs profiting off it it can bring us better quality DJs. But like it's been argued above it's hard to say whether the profit would be that much lower without it. Personally I'd be fine with paying higher cover for a better atmosphere. look at Stereo in Montreal where booze is the least of priorities, high cover is charged in it's place, big names are brought in, and the crowd is unparalleled. I'd take that over TIL any day of the week... |

I would think she would know of Arnej...she may not care for him but I'm sure she is aware of his success. Its the people that read eye weekly that probably don't really care about Arnej or trance. |
