dont forget to consider dynaudio and jbl too.
oh and btw the cheap series of ADAM A3,5,7X suck :D |
disagree there are loads of us semi-pro & pro who use the Adam line. I love my Adam's and the top is sharp but it's not harsh, do you work at really loud volumes? Well then they're not for you but if you work at moderate volumes they're fantastic!
i'm happy you posted a picture of your room as you can tell by all the reply's it matters a great deal. I would look at moving your speakers off your back wall and be sure whatever speaker you buy has FRONT FACING bass ports. You need to get something on your backwall to absorb the reflections and on the opposite wall. I built my own basstraps following this guide:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyYUpkpL0gw
all in all i spent about $350 for my entire room
As far as speakers go I'd have a listen to these, i had them in my studio for 2 weeks and they are AWESOME:

Honestly though man you're right in between the CMS50 & CMS65, i highly encourage you to contact your local dealer and ask them if you can put a deposit down and try them for a week or two to see which one works better in your room.
I am a huge Adam fan so if you can demo the A7X i highly suggest you do in comparison but either of those speakers you can't go wrong with |

no i dont play loud at all really, my monitors doesnt even play loud without distorting. i just didnt like the Adams when listening in the shop, especially the treble was problem to me. also i think the midrange somehow sounded plastic and resonating somehow. i was listening to the speaker, not the music, i call it off immediately. They reminded me of KRK, M-Audio etc...
i would love to try the Focal CMS though and compare them to my Genelecs, they are direct competitors as i see it, almost same build, size, price, and specs. Second I can really recommend Dynaudio BM5-serie for their musical properties. They might not be as flat as the genelecs but they are much more musical and warm sounding making them nice for hours and hours of listening. A friend of mine got them after comparing them to my genelecs, and sometimes I wish i had both. I have no idea how they are to produce on though.
And dont forget the JBLs with the room-correction mode (if bought in pair) :)
Im starting to repeat myself... |

ya couldn't disagree more since i upgraded from M-Audio. The Adam's are so clear, i can hear so much detail and i know exactly when & how to eq. I'm really happy w/ my purchase, i don't think i'd change until I can afford the new barefoot's. |

yeah i have a pair of the dynaudio bm5a mk2 and just got the bm9s sub to match and their a fantastic pair, definitely recommended for a smaller room but a bit pricey..the monitors are a grand and i got the sub used luckily for only 600 but its usually a grand just for the sub alone.
my next step is acoustic treatment which i need to do asap as i'm still having issues getting the bass/kick right in my tracks (basstraps are my on first thing to build) |

| i dont see the point with subs though unless your making surround filmscores/efex etc. stereo is only two channels, not 2.1. |

Or dubstep :O
Sub is probably not necessary for dance/trance
It's hard to tell exactly what your sub-bass is doing with just your monitors though...And having to go back and forth between that and a hi-fi + sub is a PITA.
Most of my friend in Colorado that produce dubstep have a sub for checking their wobs. It's probably also handy to have one for checking any sub-bombs or downlifter's to make sure they're doing what they should. Other than that :S |

the argument is that dance music, especially the stuff Nick is trying to make is built around the first octave. I don't think it's necessary to have a sub in order to make good dance music but the club systems you're playing on are really going to amplify your "misses" if you don't get it right. |

| yet another reason to have better monitors, instead of a sub :) |
