quick question if I didnt buy a sub with these would there still be a big need for bass traps?

my room is about 14x12.

No harm in getting bass traps, almost every room will have bass nulls and peaks, walk around your room and see if the bass goes quiet in some places, louder in others.

Best way to do it is to contact somebody like GIK, they will recommend what to do or even better get some room measuring software and take a frequency plot of your room

yeah ive heard of GIK they seem like a stable company. Definitly going to use "the sub money" for treatment instead.

Seriously that was such a beating for me. That's one of the primary things that told me I needed to address my monitoring situation. I mean having to do that kind of "back and forth" stuff is the quick route to sucking all the fun out of producing.

If you find yourself constantly going back and forth between different systems, and constantly making tweaks to compensate for these types of issues, then clearly that indicates a monitoring problem somewhere along the line. Whether its the monitors themselves, your D/A conversion or your room, clearly there is a problem somewhere. You shouldn't have to do all that.

hmm yeah or else im just not listening properly lol - ill look into maybe changing monitors at some time in the future, youre right it does start to take the fun out of it a bit going back and forth all the time....

Make sure that you take into consideration addressing ALL aspects of your monitoring chain, not only the monitors themselves. High end monitors aren't as effective with crappy D/A conversion.

I dont really buy into fancy D/A conversion to tell you the truth, ive read plenty of stuff here and there about it - i think my ultralite is good enough for me

TBH mate, that's a small room you've got there for those monitors and that much treatment. I have a feeling you'd actually be OK if the room were a bit bigger.

Do yourself a favor and draw out your room in Visio and send it to them before making any purchases. The GIK guys are great and they'll do a good job of giving you the right recommendation for your budget.

what is visio?

..sorry if it should be obvious.

cool thanks.

Thought I'd make a note after having sampled the HS80's and having had a pair of Beyerdynamic DT770 pros for the last 6 months or so...I sampled through a mix I was intimate with and then a few ASOT's and was quite impressed at how similar they sounded to the HS80's.

They translate quite similarly, and the response is almost identical except for the high's. The Beyer's seem to be a slightly dull/forgiving in the highs compared to the Yamahas.

Sitting in front of the HS80's was very akin to wearing my DT 770 pro's though, and I was actually kind of shocked.

So those looking for good cans would do well with 'em.

@ Rann, if you're going to make a monitor sticky, you may want to throw those in there as well...They seem to be great for dialing in mixes geared towards headphones/earbuds, and are nice for monitoring when you're away from the studio.

You'll notice a few bad reviews from people "Blowing out" the bass driver, but I have this odd inkling that they're not aware of what true monitors are supposed to sound like, and end up overcompensating the low-end in their mix, inevitably wearing them out/ pushing them too hard...Haven't had any issues with mine, and once you understand 'em, the low-end translates fine.

I had a guy come over to my place today and write me up a quote for building and installing bass traps, foam padding, and panels in the room. The treatment materials should be installed next weekend. Between then and now I plan to listen to many different monitors and, hopefully, come to a decision on a new pair.

Well guys, in the end I decided upon the KRK VXT8s. I am 100% satisfied with my purchase. I know some people hate the brand but after having used the monitors for about 3 weeks now I can say that I am quite happy with them. They're very loud, have terrific low-end response, and aren't as dull in the highs as were my Event TR8s. Admittedly, the 8s aren't as tight as the 6s but the acoustic treatment in my room has really deadened the space, which encouraged me to go with the bigger pair.

Thank you sincerely for all the help :)

I am currently finishing up the first track that I've produced completely on this new pair of monitors. But here is the first tune that's been mixed down on the VXT8s:

OKAY, so i need some halp as i'm due to upgrade my monitors after january. firstly, my bedroom is 12x10 and i've stocked up on acoustic treatment already (DIY panels, bass traps, some acoustic foam). my question to guys like Rann is: is my room too small for 8'' monitors?

finally, in setting up my bedroom. i'm facing the shorter wall at the moment since those walls are slanted inward, and the walls along the longer side are not. i did this because i assumed my room was 10x10 until i measured just now while researching monitors to invest in. would it still be beneficial to set up along the longer wall? it would be an assload of moving crap around but if it's worth it i'll do it :o

note: the slanted walls are only slant half way up. cieling is about 7 ft

Facing the shorter wall is best i think - in small room the only way is to put in as many bass traps as you can fit/afford - also make sure the trapping material is the proper density etc.

What monitors are you upgrading to? Have you thought about taking a room plot?
