Thinking of Upgrading my Studio Monitors (pg. 4)

Well not all monitors translate well to every medium, there's nothing wrong with having a sub just to get an idea of how something might sound with or without it.

i think its terrible wrong to have sub unless its a couple of PA 18" to check how it will sounds on a PA. but thats me. a sub adds sweetness to the sound, and you will compensate for it making your mixes sour.

So based on the reading I've done (this thread and others, online bass-trapping tutorials, etc.), I've decided that re-arranging my gear (putting the desk/monitors/computer alongside the short wall with the window at the back) and getting my room acoustically treated is a very smart idea. I'm still interested in getting a new pair of monitors because I anticipate that even with the acoustic treatment various features of the TR8s will still bother me (too little presence in the high end, apparent inability to handle loud volumes without distortion, etc.). I will get the room treated properly first and then decide whether to go ahead and purchase a new pair of monitors. I have not yet listened to any new monitors but based on what others have said I have preliminarily decided against the Adam A7s (supposedly not enough low-end) and the Adam A7Xs (supposedly harsh-sounding). I have the VXT6s in mind at the moment, amongst others. Dynaudio seems like a difficult brand to get around here.

I've written so many threads on this subject discussing all the choices in this thread and I'm trying to refrain from my usual posts on the subject of monitors (LSR 2325p, HS80's, FocalTwins, Barefoots in that order relating to price group) but whatever you do stay away from KRK period. The VXT's are just as the rest of the range.

the BM5's are great, as are Gene's. Adams, whilst they present great detail, are too bright IMO and I've tested them extensively.

My advice is to: either go all the way and get focal twins, or to go for HS80's and room treatment. If you can't produce on either those then it's a problem with you, not your kit.

Oh, and palm is exactly right in that Subs will not help your produce in stereo, as there is no discrete LFE channel.

Theres a huge step from HS80 to Focal Twins though, and there are many good monitors between there in his budget. I still hold my hand on smaller monitors in that room, treated or not. CMS50, 8030, BM5. And dont forget the Focal Solos but they might be too pricey. I agree that KRK suck. And I can almost say for sure that HS80 wont work in that room.

I think this is a good plan. I'd probably steer towards the dyn's or gen's though. They're probably the smallest upgrade at which you're going to notice a difference....

I'm intrigued by RANN's idea about getting HS80s though. Do you really think they're better than TR8s? I've heard the TR8s and they were really good, I also heard a pair of yamahas and they weren't that great at all, I think they might have been the smaller model in the same range, but can't really remember.

Sage wisdom

HS80s are superb. RANN recruited me to the cause and they really do work. I've already decided they're here to stay until I have the funds AND the correct room for some Twin's or Event Opals.

I'll add that the HS80s don't sound particularly nice, but every mix translates well on them (to the best of my own personal ability and my really rubbish room).

Which is kind of the point.

Man, this is one multifaceted decision that I have to make! Haha. Stay away from the KRKs eh? Alright I'll take that into consideration. The Genelecs are quite expensive around here: $540 + tax for the 8020a and $740 + tax for the 8030a. The Focal CMS 50s sell for $630 + tax.

My main concerns with upgrading from my TR8s to a better pair of monitors are:

1. Truer presentation of sound (no frequency attenuation) - if possible?
2. More presence in the mids & highs - TR8s sound a bit dull to me
3. Ability to bang out tracks without any fear of distortion or damage

In a few days I'll be heading over to my local audio shops and listening to as many different monitors as I can. Hopefully I find something that I like!

You probably shouldn't be mixing so loud that your monitors are distorting anyway.

be ready to triple your budget, you are lucky if you get two out of those on your budget :)

So, I've read some reviews and online comments and it seems fair to conlude:

1. KRKs should be avoided.
2. Genelec 8020/30As are nice monitors but require a sub for the low-end
3. Dynaudios would be a good choice.

Any thoughts on the Mackie 824MK2s? A bit pricey but I know the original 824 are considered 'legendary'.

def try the Focal's man and the Adam's. You can't trust online reviews until you've heard them yourself. I abused guitar centers 30 day return policy, i tried 4 sets of speakers before i picked
