Everyone is forgetting that the shoulders (aka deltoids) are made of 3 muscles. Pushups, bench press, and all those exercises work the front deltoids, but not the mid and back ones. To avoid injury people need to balance their muscles, so pushups are NOT a good shoulder exercise and shouldn't be the only exercise they rely on for shoulders.
Chin ups are good for biceps and forearms, while pull ups are for lats.
exactly. but they were talking about regular pushups targeting the shoulders just wanted to correct what they were talking about, i wasnt giving a workout routine.
anyways I was also wondering, if skipper knows her way around a gymn so well, why does she need a cookie cut workout like p90x? I thought she was a superstar dj, mrs fitness and the female version of Gordon Grekko/second coming of sir james Goldsmith. So I take it she learned to trade futures using Rich dad Poor Dad's tapes as well.

See above. I'm not new to strength training, however I'm not self motivated either. I also mentioned I have not had a consistent strength routine in quite some time.

One of the most effective routines is a 5x5 style sticking to basically compound lifts...and toss in cardio with it.
body building routines of a zillion exercises working out the muscle once a week is... not useful for majority of people out there.
just sayin.
p90x has its place and its nice that it lays it out for beginners. Just dont limit yourself to it ;)
Use it as a stepping stone.

I dunno man. I don't particularly love working out either. I enjoy it to an extent...but the only thing that really motivates me is thinking about all the fat miserable people in the world and being grateful I'm not one of them.
I mean, isn't feeling great and being healthy motivation enough? I cannot stand complainers. If you feel like , do something about it. Simple enough. I don't ever want to be that person who's always complaining that their diet isn't working or they need to go to the gym. Just ing do it for 's sake.

I was already in great shape and I did p90x three years ago. The program will certainly get you into shape, however, it is very inefficient. For example, if you were to switch to CrossFit or some variation of it (which I did after completing p90x), you can be stronger, fitter, more flexible, etc. by working out three days per week for less than an hour a day (mind you, that hour per day is far more challenging than any p90x routine).
P90x is a decent program, but there are more efficient ways of getting in shape that will offer you longer rest periods. I find that p90x neglects the importance of rest and recovery, which will often times lead to nagging injuries.
In terms of diet, I'd recommend eating as close to paleo as possible; i.e. eat only naturally occurring foods. I pretty much eat meat (especially fatty meats), eggs, nuts, vegetables, and fruit. Even if I take two weeks off from any testing forms of physical activity, I can still consume about 3,000 calories per day without seeing any increase in weight or change in body composition.

Everyone has different motivations and works differently. There's no one solution. The point is if a program gets someone up off the couch, or gets them eating better, or working out more consistently, then great. "Common sense" or whatever you want to dumb it down to usually isn't enough to overcome all of the subtleties of the human psyche that get in there and prevent someone from getting on a healthier path. People have studied this for ages and the only conclusion is that it is not that simple.
Just look at the show, the biggest loser - everyone was in an uproar when it first premiered because they thought it marginalized overweight people. Maybe it does - although the audience is typically looking for motivation, not to laugh at tubby people huffing and puffing through a workout. That show has inspired SO many people - as evidenced by how the careers of the trainers took off once they started selling their own home workout stuff.

the only way you target your shoulders on pushups is by elevating your legs well over your waist. so best way to do it is have your feet by a wall and crawl your feet up the wall so your on an incline then to make sure youre not targeting your upper chest or your back you have to have your arms apart wide but not too wide. if your arms are close together youll be targeting your inner upper chest. arms to far apart you'll be targeting alot on your back, so you have to find a happy medium. the higher youre up on the wall the more of your shoulders you will target.
you don't have to even do the climbing wall. you can do dive bomber push ups which is something we do in one of my bootcamp classes. you do have to have a strong back to attempt these tho.
