That's why I chuckle when Americans complain about the price of petrol in the US. Your income is considerably higher than ours, and you pay almost half the price we pay in Brazil. |
The only difference you might be overlooking is the US provides very little in the way of social service. Both health care and college education aren't free here. |

Not sure. We also need to deal with the urban sprawl in big cities (my fiancée, for example, used to live 50km from here before she moved in), and it's not unusual for people to work in a neighbouring city. In this case, I guess it's just that you were used to pay a lower price and you want that good old price. Likewise, we're used to paying more, although there are some recent complaints regarding the price of fuel around here. So much so that the president had to intervene :p

Actually, this is not completely true:- We tend to pay for private healthcare once we can afford it. Unfortunately, our country still cannot offer quality healthcare yet;
- Though the best universities are public (i.e. free), most Brazilians probably go to private institutions anyway. As a matter of fact, the best schools before college all tend to be paid.
I wish you were right there but the system is not that much different :( |

| My comments are more directed at the EU, UK, Canada, Japan. Not that any system is perfect. Most ppl from outside the US only know you can earn more here but don't take the high cost of living into account. In particular that in a capitalist system the cost and risk is put squarely on the individual with very little safety net. Healthcare and college is very good here if you can afford it. I remember talking to someone from France who wanted transfer to a US college but couldn't afford it. So I asked how much was she currently paying for tuition and she said $50 a semester! Here you're talking $80,000 for a 4 yr degree. |
