Also, 30k will get you house in the middle of ing nowhere or some lame state like Alabama or Arkansas. But if you want to live in a city that matters you're going to pay, at the very least, $400k for a small, old, fixer upper.

30 k, pretty nice houses, large sqftage probably 30 minutes away from atlanta. not so bad is it? Me and sunsnail were looking at em a while back.

Harder is a relative term. Much easier still to get a loan in the states than cananda, and rates have yet to climb thanks to bernake's quantative easing.

see what I said about national averages. "Cities that matter" is a moot point.

No it's not. Of course the average is going to be really low, America is a HUGE country with realty in most cities being fairly cheap because they are desolate/ areas to live in.

Very true. My apartment in Rochester is about $700 a month, and my brother's apartment in NYC is $2,700 a month, and they're relatively similar in size.

even if you wan to nit pick at cities, don't forget the US provides lower loan rates AND much higher tax relief. Thus signficiantly lowering cost of living.

even if you are buying a million dollar condo in manhattan, that would probably equate to the cost of a 600k condo in canada due to taxation mortgage etc (IF you plan on getting a mortgage).

Hence cost of living is higher in canada, no matter which or what way you look at it.

just imagine the amount of leverage you can have with writing off your loan interest expenses. Well, you don't have to imagine because you guys can do it.

also compare average wages. I'm sure there is a correlation.

edit:

a quick look at personal income average for Manhattan i see $127k
rochester im seeing a median family income of around $30k.

again i dont know the accuracy of those numbers, but the point is there is quite a large spread.
