Circus had problems with sound and we fixed it 2 months ago after 7 years of operation. Yes these things take time because of the usual money issue
It's no like buying AC to put in your window hehe. We're talking about 30000 square feet here. But as I said, I'm working on it ;-)
And for the sound, it's funny how so many people told me the exact opposite ... Saying the system was perfect and not having issues the next morning. Actually Digweed said the same thing himself when we went around the club around 9am. We were on the dancefloor together and it was very easy to understand each other speaking. One thing tho, he plays loud. You should have been in the Dj booth haha. Wow |

Of course there is. But it's very hard for a DJ to know exactly the situation on the dance floor, even more when you are not a club resident.
And the master of the mixer itself is not an indicator of how it is out there. We can play with the Rane, Pioneer, Xone, and then the number of people also have a considering effect on absorbing volume.
That's why when I was playing at Stereo I was always looking at the amps, not the mixer. |

| I had my custom earplugs. I had to change the buttons from -15db to -25db. My friends put kleenex in their ears. They were freaking out and scared of permanent damage. |

Here is my review:
I spent a few minutes in the trance room at the beginning of the night but did not go back. So, I won't comment on the music and vibe in that room. I just want to give props to Omar who did not only stick to trance and played some really cool tracks from different genres (namely from Electric Rescue and Luis Junior).
Hakim also did a great job opening for Diggers. I liked the fact that he played more tech-house for his last hour, preparing the crowd for Diggers' set, while the techno tracks he played before that were all quality.
Digweed was extremely good, vastly superior to most djs out there, but I found his set to be less well programmed than other sets I've heard him play before. His first 45 minutes consisted of some nice and groovy tech-house before he moved into techno territory. However, he was supposed to play for 3 hours but played 4 and the flow of the last hour of his set reflected that change. Of course, the tracks were ridiculously good but the pace was uneven. He did seem to be enjoying himself throughout the night, which you rarely get to see with him.
A lot of the techno tracks he dropped were simply phenomenal and, as some other people have mentioned, they were mostly upfront, unreleased tracks. It was really interesting to hear some of the tracks from the upcoming Structures 2 compilation, especially Oliver Lieb's production that was massive on the new system.
Here are some the tracks he dropped:
- John Digweed & Nick Muir - Bilder (King Unique Rebild)
- Maxime Dangles - Santé
- Oliver Lieb - Parallax
- Paneoh feat. Maetrik - Follow
- John Digweed & Nick Muir - 30 Northeast
- Luca Bacchetti - What Your Soul Sings (Paul Ritch Remix)
- Robotman - Do Da Doo (Christian Smith Big Room Remix)
- Guy J - Azimuth (? Remix - perhaps one of the entries in the remix competition)
- Markantonio - Sade (Flavio Diaz Remix)
- Marco Bailey - Rubber Band (Dave Angel Remix)
- Underworld - Dark & Long (? Remix)
I also believe that Benoit & Sergio - Let Me Count The Ways was one of the first tracks he played. If not, it was a similar tech-house track with a vocal.
As for the heat, yes it was almost unbearable at one point, but it was also possible to find spots that well ventilated, thus more comfortable. I've been to events in the past there much worse, temperature wise.
The crowd was really good, a mix of young people and some older prog fans that were there for Digweed. I know that some of my friends were a little dissapointed with the fact that Diggers did not play any prog but I had told them to expect mostly techno tracks, which is exactly what we got.
Bottom line is I had a really good night out. Props to Circus (Louis and the gang) for putting this night together. |

And I spent most of the night on the dancefloor but did not have any ringing in my ears afterwards.
I thought the new soundsytem sounded great. However, the bass is extra punchy and tends to overshadow the mids on certain tracks. |

Mental mental night...
First time hearing Digweed by himself and i really enjoy his musical choices nowadays and the flow of his set was amazing... The last hour was a little less tight, but you know, it's digweed so it was still excellent and i couldn't stop dancing! Thanks a lot for bringing him to a "smaller" event where he truly showed why he's THE man (compared to this, we all know B&B was )
I don't want to be complaining too much about this, enough as been said, but i can't help myself...I knew it would be hot in there, based on what i had seen at the Umek overcrowded party, and i usually enjoy the hotness of a wild night like that, but friday was just over the top. I didn't let it affect my energy_level, but i kept looking around and saw a crowd really annoyed by it. At some point i realized that there were a few who were really on fire like me, and the others wanted to but just couldn't. That's sad... The ing building would've exploded if it wasn't for the lack of fresh air, and i think it would've been a legendary night for everyone... Money issues? Just do a telethon, i'll give my share, because i'll think twice, and a third and fourth time about going back for another gigantic night like this, even if it's sasha+Digweed+Sven+Frankie+Jesus and if you resuscitate Elvis for the occasion... Oh and forget about the mist, we're already flooded, you know...
Talking about flood...Bathrooms...Ever thought about changing the taps? Filling your bottle and having water from the counter running on your legs and shoes is so-so, and it gets really slippery in there, saw a bunch of girls almost falling off their higheels ... Just sayin...
I copy: The sound is agressive for the ears.
Suggestion: think about a plan to have more women come in, specials, reduced tix, nude male dancers, i don't know... I know the sausage over-majority is common in the electronic scene, but at circus it's just woooow... It gets uncomfortable sometimes, from a girl's point of vue. Im sure the boys agree with this...
So, after the mildly negative comes the positive: I never thought i would ever have so much fun at Circus, really... With the exciting bookings you bring to Mtl, i can imagine one day never reading again that the party would've been more fun at Stereo...
Thank you for the good work, hope to hear soon about improvments, can't wait to go back! |

| After reading a couple of your reviews, I have to admit that the crowed acted like pros. The past few times I've been to Stereo on a friday for Guy Gerber and Guy J, the place got empty around 7 am. Circus was pretty banging till 8 am and then some. Good to see a crowed like that! |
