At a barebones biological level (assuming they are straight and looking)? Of course they do. Works in reverse too.
How are you supposed to compete with others and attract a mate if your attractiveness is diminished?
You can preach about self empowerment, confidence, self-belief and so on all you want, but more often than not an initial attraction is based on looks.
How is this any different to a woman telling me I look better clean shaven than with a beard? It isn't. It's exactly the same.
If all of a sudden there was a sudden craze for all men to grow a Hitler moustache because they all thought it made them look better, but in fact made them less attractive to women, would you then comment that men shouldn't care because they don't need to be attractive to women to have a fulfilled existence in 2011? I see a lot of double standards here.
Point is - I don't like "Cleopatra" fringes, most men that I've spoken to don't, we generally agree that it makes women less attractive, women seem to think differently, so it's only right for us to point it out in an effort for women to be hotter. I see nothing wrong with that. |

you missed the entire point of my post.
obviously attractiveness is key in this way.
but beauty is more standardized around the world than ever, and the standard is often unrealistic and unhealthy.

what's the use in talking about what should be important for companies? obviously $$ is the only thing that will ever be important for businesses. rather, I'm more interested in talking about what our collective cultural (and more importantly, individual) dreams could be. i think there is an ethical question here that just doesnt matter anymore. |

I understand that, I just don't think it's as big of an issue as you describe. If you're supposing that all men hold the same standard of beauty as fashion magazines, you're incorrect. If all men only wanted perfect 10s, and they never settled for anything less than supermodels, there would be a world full of single men. Sure, they might think that's desirable, but it's not as if it is the only thing they'll accept.
Tons of guys prefer attractive girls with personalities other than attractive girls with no humor/intellect/etc. Many different men also have many different types. Some guys like "thick" girls, some guys like thin girls, some guys like blondes, brunettes, red heads, etc. I don't think there's this universal standard of attractiveness that you're assuming. There may definitely be one in magazines and commercials, and the women in those commercials may very well be seen as unbelievably attractive and desirable to most men, but that doesn't mean that they're the "standard" for beauty.
I think you're painting men with a more superficial brush than is accurate.
Also, there's nothing ethically wrong with wanting an attractive mate. That's just human nature. |

If you think I'd sport that hairstyle in an effort to attract the opposite sex, you are sorely mistaken. I'd only ever do something with my hair If *I* deem it attractive and suitable.
I've had the same hairstyle for a decade. I'm not very adventurous with it. But if I see something cool I may try it for the day.

| It's funny when very attractive people say that beauty is "relative." It's quite easy to not care about how the opposite sex perceives your level of attractiveness when you already know that almost all of them find you attractive. |

I would hazard to say that a lot of the airbrushed and stick figure "beauties" in magazines are driven more by what women perceive to be perfection, rather than men. A point so conveniently always skipped over. |

That's true. Or what women perceive to be what men perceive to be attractive, etc. It's very very rare that I find a runway model to be especially attractive. I think that look is gross. |

Well that's very kind of you but I don't consider myself "very attractive". I just don't care, I don't follow trends, much less take into account what other people think of a certain look/hairstyle, which is very convenient cause I get to do whhat I want. :tongue3 |
