Why didn't I bring more than 1 ciggie to work? Now I'll have to bum one off the lady that's awake right now having a coffee.

Lol "bum one".

Serious question for Jenny. How exactly do nurse shifts work? I know a lot of nurses where it seems like they work like 12 hour shifts overnight sometimes, but will then get random days off during the week and so forth. Do you have a regular shift or is it just on an as-needed basis?

Yep, thats pretty much how it works. You also can rotate from Nightshift/Dayshift after 1-2 days off.

Depends on what area of nursing one is in. A nurse working for public health, for example, works more 9-5 type hours...same with nurses working in doctor's offices, etc.

But for many other areas (hospitals, long term care, etc) it's all shift work. Typical shifts are 4 shifts on, 5 off (12 hours) usually with every other weekend off (full time). Some places offer 8 hour shifts. Part time and casual shifts are all over the place.

Shift work is pretty awesome if you don't have kids or a family. I love it. Love random days off midweek and such. I couldn't do 9-5.

That sounds awful.

I apologize for all the I said about you Jenny. Your profession is certainly an admirable one.
