According to this site, I should really consider voting Green. which is really a surprise to me because I never thought I'd be so much in common with the Greens. (and Elizabeth May scares me) |

And who pays for Samsung's portion through higher electricity rates?
My point still stands. |
| quote: | | South Korea-based Samsung C&T Corp. has signed a $3 billion (Canadian) contract to build wind and solar energy plants in Ontario. News reports said that under the terms of the contract, Samsung C&T will build 520-megawatt projects in the Haldimand and Chatham-Kent regions and 550-MW projects in Kingston and Bruce. Korea Electric Power Corp. will design the plants’ electrical wiring and operate the plants. Samsung C&T said the contract represents the first two steps of a five-step plan over two decades to build and operate 2,000 MW of wind capacity and 500 MW of solar power capacity in the province. Construction is expected to begin in 2012 and be completed by 2014. In 2010, Samsung committed to invest $7 billion ($7.07 billion American) under Ontario’s Green Energy Act. That investment pledge came in exchange for $110 million ($111.17 million) in subsidies over the next 25 years. |
http://www.renewableenergyworld.com...wind-solar-deal
7 billion investment by Samsung in exchange for $3 billion in subsidies over a 25 yr period. Result 2500 MW of renewable energy. $110 million per year over 13 million in population of Ontario is $8 per capita/year. You are worried about $8 a year increase???
Bruce Power: 6 out of 8 reactors are online representing: 4700MW
Bruce A was projected to cost $0.9 billion (1969), and actually cost $1.8 billion (1978). Bruce B was projected to cost $3.9 billion (1976), and actually cost $6 billion (1989) in "dollars of the year"
Refurbishment costs: In 2011, it was reported that Unit1 and 2 refurbishment, originally scheduled for 2009, is now predicted to be in commercial operation in 2012. Cost is $3.8 billion so far; the final cost is expected to be $4.8 billion. The original 2005 estimate was $2.75 billion. (wikipedia). Add to that maintenance costs, infrastructure upgrades (absolutely necessary to avoid massive line loss, instability), rising costs (uranium mining, disposal), health risks, dangers... you cannot calculate what the final "cost" would be cuz there is no limit. 500 MW of Solar requires little to no maintenance (no moving parts, no waste, no health effects etc.)
Again, I am not suggesting a purely "green" system as that obviously is subject to weather conditions/ day vs night. TBH wind I'm not a fan of in Ontario but solar has the most potential (as we have better conditions for solar production than Miami) as it relieves the greatest strain on the grid during the day.
Reason why I am putting so much effort into this is because of the lack of real information the public is receiving. Feed-in-tariffs are good because it sets a fixed rate for the entire contract period (20 years). Prove to me the cost per kWh right now of nuclear will remain the same for the next 20 years... ya you can't. The rate for microFIT is 80 cents because it was too attract people to make the step towards change. If there is no incentive, everyone will point fingers and nothing will get done. In October, the rate OPA offers for microFITs will be dropping to 63-68 cents/kWh. We don't want every single rooftop to be solar fitted. Rather a good mix of renewable energy and current power production. Hudak is not offering any solution just "rahh rahhh rahhh your hydro rates are going up cuz of Dalton". Well give me something to work with here and I'll shut up.
My solution for sustainable grid:
Day: focus on solar, hydro electric, some wind, small reliance on nuclear or natural gas (burning fossil fuels during day adds to an already present smog issue)
Night: hydro electric, wind, nuclear, natural gas
This being said, having major solar installs closer to urban areas (within 25-50 km to avoid voltage loss) and smaller micro-generating units (such as on homes) can only benefit us in the long term.
Oh also, rising energy costs? Well how bout some talks on energy conservation? That can knock a big portion of your bill significantly. Don't have your AC cranked if you aren't home, don't leave lights on if you aren't in the room (or heck get sensor switches if you are lazy), keep your fridge at a medium setting, don't leave your computer on 24/7, and avoid phantom power (up to 10% of your bill). Simple steps for those whining bout their bills.
Ok thanks for the read. Good night :p |

i think conservatives are going to take it for the following reason: the people who vote every year is the same damn group of people. no new voters will come in to really shift balances and freak everybody out.
the same damn 50% has seen this circus so many times already that they may swing to one party or another on the basis of just one issue. the debates are the same every year. the promises are tired. the show must go on. the numbers will remain within the standard deviation.
i vote: spoiled ballot. not interested in choosing between incremental differences between left and right.
as a side note: you guys think a hired exec would do a better job administrating, or no? |

Great question. Unfortunately, a hired exec would not be better because of the culture in government ranks. So while the exec would have visions .... the implementation would fail because of the subordinates...
I would love to see the gov. run like an organization. Setup proper measurements and drive towards improvements. If no improvements, take action. |

History is going to repeat itself; Conservatives come in and drive the country into the ground and then the Liberals are always back to clean up.
The thought of a total conservative canadian government disgusts me. |

NDP Response to my question about transportation (only one of 3 that responded to my email inquiry:
| quote: |
Hi Patrick,
The first step that the NDP would take is to improve public transit,
such as GO and local public transit systems. We would freeze fares for
four years and re-implement the 50/50 transit cost sharing agreements
that were cancelled by former Conservative Premier Mike Harris and not
re-introduced by the McGuinty Liberals.
The idea of HOV lanes would be good, however, the driving public is
not properly in tune to the new system; for example driving quite
slowly in what is now the new passing lane and the traffic bunching up
at the start and end of these lanes.
Gridlock is a serious problem not only for businesses, which can
suffer delays by traffic jams, but for the environment when so many
cars are idling in slow – or no – moving traffic. This is something
that we will study seriously with the goal to be better access to
expanded public transit and the reduction of highway gridlock.
Thanks for your concern,
Paul Miller

i got the same results. it's actually pretty cool site and tells you about the major issues that can be handled at the the provincial level. |
