goddamned emotion!
here's how i see it: people have to find the balance between who they are, and how society (friends, family, coworkers, neighbors, etc) sees them. the degree to which they are affected by/change themselves to fit the norms of society can limit the expression of who they really are. when this scale gets too out of balance, you have gross hypocrisy and intolerance. there is a degree of acceptance that is lacking in society (or, conversely, a weakness on the part of the individual to dismiss the criticisms of others) that leads to things like murder, harassment, scandal, suicide, self-harm, persecution, etc. we live in a world where people can be murdered for being gay depending on where they live. we also live in a world where the Prime Minister of Iceland is an openly gay woman. personally, i hope we continue to move in the direction of tolerance. how that is best achieved is still a mystery to me. |

i'm not suggesting tolerance should be absolute. we should not tolerate, as a society, any action that harms the person or property of another. we should, however, tolerate any action that does NOT harm the person or property of another.
the value of such tolerance is liberty. to be who you are and do things that make you happy, whether or not the outcome is harmful to oneself is irrelevant. once a person has reached the age of consent they should be free to do as the please so long as it doesn't hurt anyone or their property. |

who has always decided what is harmful? why are cigarettes legal and marijuana is not? why is marriage between a man and a woman legal, but homosexual unions are largely illegal and bigamy/polygamy are totally illegal? why is gambling legal some states and illegal in others? why is pornography legal but prostitution is not?
these oppositions are derived from morality, and much of morality is derived from religion. in a secular society, it is a gross violation to federalize morality. |

Wait... so you're confusing me here... you're saying that everything should be tolerated provided it isn't harmful; harmful to be defined by legislators (and/or the judiciary), and then questioning the legitimacy of that which legislators and the courts base their definition of harmful on? How can you say legislators and the courts should determine what is to be tolerated then question the whether or not they have made sound judgments regarding same in the past? Why would you give them that authority if you question whether it has been well exercised traditionally? |

What institution truly has a monopoly on morality, though? Don't say religion, because religion is merely a word we use to describe a process.
Why is the observation of secularity necessarily cellular? So long as it is stemming from any given authority, whether it be federal or otherwise, what difference does that make? If you're not gravitating toward "absolute tolerance" - an obviously impossible pitfall - then your result is inevitably going to be in the very same flux it always has been.
Tolerance of any sort is always essentially harmful, but to whom and how much does it cost? |
